On the Missouri Sky cd with Charlie Haden there is a beautiful rendering of Jimmy Webb’s The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Drummer and arranger/composer john Hollenbeck in his colloboration has produced a rather suite-like piece with a very dramatic ending. On his recording with the Frankfurt Radio Big band (Big Band des Hessischen Rundfunks) we hear two beautiful voices Kate McGarry and Theo Bleckmann on songs like Wichita Line man, Moon is a Harsh mistress. Man of constant sorrow reminds me very much of First Folk Song from 80/81; the guitar strumming, the drums and the saxophones are really very close to Mehteny/Brecker/DeJohnette. Maybe Pat should try something together with Hollenbeck and HR Big Band.

Bookmark and Share ulrichspiegel I agree with everything you say here. This is a beautiful song and I think the collaboration with Pat would be perfect. There are other big bands I would like to hear him with but this one works for me.
