A review of Steven Wilson’s The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories), today at All About Jazz. After touring his last studio record, Grace for Drowning - documented on two live recordings (one limited edition release; the other for mass consumption), Wilson went into the studio almost immediately to write music for The Raven but, for the first time, with this very specific group of musicians in mind - all major players. Playing with people like woodwind/reed multi-instrumentalist Theo Travis, keyboardist Adam Holzman, bassist Nick Beggs, drummer Marco Minnemann and new recruit, guitarist Guthrie Govan - allowed Wilson to raise his game compositionally. Recording old school, largely live off the floor allowed Wilson, for the first time, to capture the energy of a live band in a studio environment. And working with renowned engineer Alan Parsons further helped the British singer/guitarist/keyboardist to realize this exceptional collection of story-based songs in a progressive vein, played by a group with no shortage of jazz cred. It ain’t jazz, it ain’t even jazzy; but the language can’t help but seep in. The deluxe edition is a beautiful over-sized book with a second cd of demos, a DVD and Blu-Ray with surround sound mixes, bonus tracks and more. Wilson, once again, hits it out of the park with an album that demonstrates continued growth. Review here: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=44048
