I was reading Tim Sandlin’s "Social Blunders" (the third book in his "Gros Vont" trilogy, first published in 1995) and I came across the following. The narrator and protagonist, Sam, is riding his stationary exercise bike for miles and miles and he describes what he’s feeling: "The neat thing about physically pushing yourself above and beyond endurance is that after exhaustion comes second wind, then after second wind you slide into bizarre, disconnected thought processes. Bizarre, disconnected thought processes are followed by third and fourth winds during which the brain goes to lands even drugs can’t take it...." I wonder if that’s what Pat and Lyle had in mind when they wrote "Third Wind"?

Bookmark and Share Third Wind is like you’re munching out at a holiday dinner, and you go back for that third plate,or,sometime after that,it could be the third time you pass flatus.

Bookmark and Share My guess would be the Title comes from the song being essentially written in 3 separate and distinctive parts. Considering it’s quite a long composition and it’s played at a blistering tempo, you need your "Third Wind" to get through it.

Bookmark and Share I thought it was pronounced with a long I... after a tough night of changing the clocks for Daylight Savings Time.

Bookmark and Share The music stands on its own, and one can take from it whatever they want. The title is irrelevant...

Bookmark and Share I always thought the song referred to the Third World. Sort of like a warm wind blowing in from the third world with new rhythms and beats that a lot of people at that time had never really heard. I can’t imagine it being drug related or anything else really.

Bookmark and Share I always took the expression "third wind" to mean you were involved in some type of physical activity and continuing on even after total exhustion. As in getting a third wind and completing a marathon. But I’ve never heard of anything to do with a drug related state of mind.

Bookmark and Share I dount it. I think when you reach a bizarre and disconnected thought process you should stop pedaling your exercise bike.

Bookmark and Share It’s pretty well known that Pat is a runner so you could very well be right. On the hand, would it really matter to the emotional context of the song? Just sayin...;-)
