I’m very saddened to have read that she passed away. Rest in Peace, that’s all I really should say here.

Bookmark and Share Back in ’86 or ’87, Whitney did her first european TV-show in Belgium. I got to be there and heard this great voice singing "All at once".Whitney came over to do the show for about a 100 US$ at the time, just to get some promotion. Initially Dionne Warwick, who performed earlier that year in that same show send over a tape to the producer to convince him to give Whitney a chance. And he did. And I was there. We even smoked a cigarette after the show outdoors, Whitney waiting for her ride to the hotel. Great memories.

Bookmark and Share Well here it is right here. Beautiful reharmonized orchestra arrangement, flawless vocals. It explains on Wiki that there was a lip- synch controversy. It says she used a prerecorded (protection) copy, but sang it in full voice with the microphone turned off. Either way it’s a wonderful production of our national anthem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wupsPg5H6aE

Bookmark and Share If I remember correctly,Whitney performed the National Anthem live at the Super Bowl, right here in Tampa Bay with our own "Florida Orchestra",a group of great integrity.I can’t imagine these musicians showing up to join Whitney in faking the National Anthem.I know there are a few Metheny fans in the orchestra. If any of you are frequenting this site, would you care to weigh in on this and confirm or correct my assumptions?(Under the anonymity of the web,of course).

Bookmark and Share For the record, her singing the national anthem was not done live, it was taped and she lip synched. It was also the only version of the American national anthem to actually enter the singles charts.

Bookmark and Share I missed Whitney’s Super Bowl performance...Does anyone remember Marvin Gaye doing the NBA All-Star game in ’83 or so? I had the pleasure of being there live and that was the quintessential performance IMO.

Bookmark and Share I wish her Eternal Peace Although I never owned any of her music her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at the 91 superbowl was the best I think I have ever heard that sung. Quite Impressive, and unequaled

Bookmark and Share I think when people look at what she was and had and then what she ended up being, they criticize. There’s also a bunch of social issues underneath all of this but society today is too gutless to address them. I just wish her final peace myself.

Bookmark and Share I dont know how anyone can say anything remotely negative about Whitney Houston. She had a talent that was beyond imagination, and anyone dying that young with those issues, its just incredibly sad.She made songs that could have been trite in the wrong hands, absolutely inspirational.

Bookmark and Share i hope my earlier post was not taken wrong by some. it IS a shame that she passed so young. the real issue and disease that permiates our society today is that of drug abuse. there really is no use for illicit drug use. i guess when one is in a fickle business like music it is easy to fall prey to drugs once the adoration of the fans ends. i am sure the family is hurting terribly now but this too will pass for them. in forums like this levity can sometimes be used to right our ship and remember the good times. no harm was initially intended. remember SAY NO TO DRUGS and teach your children well so this kind of stuff, drug abuse and deaths, stops.

Bookmark and Share My comment was not totally meant to be humorous. It also serves to be a tribute.Listening to different performers sing the song "I Will Always Love You" in tribute to her, some performed it better than others. It’s a song where the notes are VERY long in the chorus. And no matter how good those tribute performances were, those long notes just kind of sat there and didn’t really go anywhere. That’s what makes that song so hard to sing. And when Whitney sang it,those notes just kind of floated effortlessly. She had such a sense of phrasing that even when singing such a series of long notes, the song continued to move along, there was still a forward momentum, that most other singers could not pull off. That’s why that song really only worked for Whitney. Now,there I’ve gone from "snarky" to "gushing high praise".Human beings are complex creatures and though they may fall to certain foilables, they can also attain great things. We’ve seen this many times with great artists. It seems to be part of the human condition. However,I will not attempt to sing the national anthem.

Bookmark and Share She was a daughter, a wife and a mother. I’m fairly sure her family is not that concerned about her artistic merits. You might want to consider the grief they are experiencing before the snarky comments. Just a thought.

Bookmark and Share Houston worked with Bill Laswell and Material before Clive Davis turned her into a pop diva. I vaguely remember listening to her sing a ballad off of this album in the early 80’s and she was remarkable. Nothing at all like what she became. Hopefully in the wake of her death they’ll re-issue this record, it’s worth listening to.

Bookmark and Share Whitney did have a beautiful voice and range. I don’t believe she ever did songs that would stand the test of time except for the National Anthem. she’ll be remembered but for how long? @hman01, nice rendition of that song. NOW, how ’bout a try at the anthem?

Bookmark and Share Oh I don’t know. Her vocalese unfortunately paved the path for others who couldn’t do it as well. That’s always what happens though, you get someone unique and then there’s always a ton of copy cats who don’t have the talent to pull it off as well as the original.
