Would suggest to Pat of making a new project with the orchestrion: to compose and arrange a Christmas-Album with the orchestrion: thought of all the bells and cymbals and windgenerated sounds... |

maybe the idea of doing the traditional christmas songs is a bad idea. perhaps Pat could do an album of songs that are not remotely christmasy but have song names, and use instruments, that will put the listener in a wintery frame of mind. when i listen to last train home i am put on a train going somewhere when i hear As Falls Wichita i’m instantly in an impending storm. the individual listener(s) could then, if they like, equate this to christmas. the Rippingtons did an album called Curves Ahead years ago that when listened to puts me in a wintery frame of mind. Russ Freeman, the bands leader, incidentally did an album called Holiday. maybe this too will be viewed as dumb but that’s OK with me. just a thought. |

The idea came during watching with my nephews the movie "The Polarexpress". The main thing in the movie is the sound of the train (reminds me also of Last train home), but also of several christmas carols and the sound of the bells. After watching the movie i listened again to the orchestrion album and also heard those sounds in the finger cymbals, mallets and marimba sounds. So i think the orchestrion provides the perfect sound environment to paint a perfect picture of winter, snowflakes, ice, bells, warmth and light... |

Over the Christmas break, I heard so many xmas jazz songs I was in high spirits. KLPU from Tacoma and KMHD in Portland played so many great treatments of the so called "tired and same" xmas stuff............I was amazed at the number of innovative treatments and expressions.........Pat should, can, and will I presume do whatever he wants or needs to express at this point in time........although many here in the NW are hoping he comes back next or this year with the big group............ |

It isn’t just Metheny, I don’t want ANYONE to do more versions of those same 10 or 12 songs that we hear without a break from now mid October until the new year every year. Enough already! This year was especially bad for me, it seemed everywhere I went, there was Silent Night again and again. |

I think it’s a bad idea. It has nothing to do with ones faith or lack thereof. I just don’t need to hear Metheny doing holiday tunes. |

I think "Ozark" sounds like a Christmas song. |

why not put the metheny twist on traditional christmas tunes? wouldn’t it be nice to hear christmas time is here on the piccaso? maybe he could compose some new holiday standards. "rainriver", would you mind stating why this is a bad idea? many jazz icons did christmas albums, armstrong, ella, and etta are just a few to start. |

Pat’s a very evident atheist, but that has nothing to do with musical appreciation of the holiday spirit. One of my favorite songs to play during the winter holidays that I think catches the "holiday" feeling like other Christmas music I’ve heard is "Just Like the Day" from Trio 99->00. I LOVE that tune. It builds so well, is comforting, and the trio nails it. |

I think this would be a great idea. I have sent several requests for this to Pat in the Q&A section of the web page. Haven’t gotten a response. Don’t know if Pat has any religious belief issues or fears with a project like this. I think he would and should consider a project like this for his followers who are clammering for this type of recording. I think it would be well received by the majority. |
