Bookmark and Share ZPZ at the De Montfort Hall were terrific. Here’s the set (deep breath) - Black Napkins, the whole of Apostrophe (Yellow Snow, Nanook Rubs It, St. Alfonzo’s Pancake Breakfast, Father O’Blivion, Cosmik Debris, Excentrifugal Forz, Apostrophe, Uncle Remus, Stinkfoot), Inca Roads, cheepnis, Peaches en Regalia, Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy, What’s the Ugliest Part of Your Body, Chunga’s Rvenge, Fifty Fifty, Rollo, I’m the Slime. Encores - Dancin’ Fool, Baby Snakes, Muffin Man. I didn’t remember all that - a friend of mine managed to get a set list, which Dweezil signed. What a guy!

Bookmark and Share There have been a couple of bands in the UK playing the Zappa repertoire, and have made a decent job of it. Guitarist John Etheridge put together the "Zappatistas" (http://www.johnetheridge.com/zappa/) for a music festival around a dozen years ago, and they tend to approach the music from a jazzer’s perspective. Their gigs aren’t that frequent (the economics of gigging an 8-piece band...), but always enjoyable. However with Dweezil you’re getting as close as possible to the real thing - maybe it’s in the DNA. Ed Palermo’s Big Band also does a great job of arranging FZ’s work for a large ensemble.

Bookmark and Share Yeah Tom, I’ve heard Project/Object, but not live. From my perspective, they are not as good as ZPZ. Dweezil and his band have really captured the true essance of the whole Zappa experience. Whereas P/O is a notch below that. Just my 2 cents.

Bookmark and Share I’ll be at the Leicester De Montfort Hall gig on Sunday 27 November. It’s really pleasing that the band is doing about a dozen dates, rather than one or two in London. For this tour they’ll be performing "Apostrophe" in its entirety and in sequence. ZPZ are a seriously talented group. Having seen FZ every time he toured the UK since 1972, I can say that this band is on a par any of his.
