I caught JT on the last night of his UK tour at the Cardiff
International Arena, and what a great show it was! A varied programme
of favourites old and new, a cracking band (Larry Goldings, Mike
Landau, Jimmy Johnson, Chad Wackerman), three excellent backing
singers, one of whom played violin. Add to that JT’s amiable persona
- during the interval and after the show he was signing autographs
from the front of the stage - and you have the recipe for a great
gig. I was slightly misty-eyed by the third encore, with 5000 Welsh
voices singing along to "You’ve Got a Friend"... |

Sounds great. 02 not the perfect venue for JT but I guess a lot of people want to see the great man. Shame I missed it.

Same over here, flugeler, on
hearing Wayne Johnson’s
Arrowhead for the first time. If
I’d been in a car I would have
pulled over as well :) Not in
the least because of Flim
Johnson’s bass playing.

cdub - Yep - same guy. "Arrowhead,"
"Grasshopper," "Spirit of the Dancer"...
First time I heard the tune "Arrowhead"
was one of those pull the car over and dig
it moments.

fred--In my best Dana Carvey-esque imitation of Johnny Carson..."I did not know that..."
Goes to show when you think you’ve got a handle on the music biz, the obvious and well-known by everyone else bites you in the butt. A micro second of googling woulda probably enlightened me.

BobSmith, as you may know, Jimmy Johnson has played with James for decades now.

zargb5--I must have missed that the first time I read the start of this thread--Chad Wackerman and Jimmy Johnson??...I had to rub my eyes a couple of times. I think JT is a brilliant musician and guitar player but those two on drums and bass would have been extremely unexpected to say the least, although I’ll give props to JT, he recognized their incredible synergy as a rhythm section and capability to play anything that’s thrown at them. I wonder if they’ll do a bit of Wardenclyffe Tower during sound check.

I saw JT a number of years back at Darien Lake PAC. He was great the band was terrific and featured Blue Lou Marino (of Blues Brothers Fame), and The incredible Steve Gadd on Drums. It was a great show.

Pete, "stand outside", in a blizzard no doubt. While being attacked by triffids. Those were the days.

barefoot through snow ? thats nothing . back in the 1900s we had to fight off wild animals and maruading vagabonds just to pay the concert hall owner for permission to stand outside and strain to hear a few tunes . But we were happy .

Nice Fred! Back in the 1900’s I used to walk 20 miles through the snow, barefoot, to see James Taylor!

I took one look at the prices and decided not to go to the O2, which would have been my nearest venue. I’ve seen him indoors and out a couple of times in recent years and enjoyed both gigs a lot. I just felt I’d be repeating the dose in less agreeable surroundings this time. I’ll check out those clips though...

Long ago, I accepted JT as my personal savior. One of the greatest. Larry Goldings, too! BTW, the singer who plays fiddle is Andrea Zonn, a fantastic musician in her own right ... check out her beautiful album Love Goes On. She’s the daughter of one of my university composition professors back in the 1900s.

If you search for "James Taylor
UK 2011" on YouTube you can find
video clips from the Manchester
and Birmingham gigs which are of
surprisingly good quality.

Must have been great. JT is one of my favourite singers and performers of all time. I hope he’ll come to Holland one day.
