Very delighted to see Esperanza Spaulding picking up a grammy for "Best New Atrist" And IMO I just love Lady Antebellum beating out Lady GaGa, Eminiem, Jay Z, and the rest of all those wierdo’s for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Finally those grammy people did something right, and gave the award to musicians that actually play and sing music. |

Yep, great news on Esperanza. She is very dynamic. Totally deserved. Good old Grammys. A bit like when Herbie won, and Steely Dan. A blow for music. But don’t lump together GaGa, Eminem etc. Some are more genuine than others. I’ve got time for JayZ and GaGa. Plenty of talent there. |

Esperanza plays on the new Joe Lovano CD Bird Songs. |

Esperanza Spalding’s win was a triumph for the Recording Academy’s voting membership as well. |

Esperanza is the offical ambassador of the Portland Jazz Festival and a performer next saturday........in fact her and Dave Frishberg are the only "sold out" shows so far...they are both Portland people.... |

I saw Esperanza at Newport in 08 and she was good enough then to have won. I wonder why they waited until now to consider her "new"?Either way, she was deserving and it’s even better that a jazz musician/singer is recognized over the usual contemporary Top 40 hitmakers. |

Thrilled about the Esperanza Spaulding win! Arcade Fire is okay, but definitely the right choice considering the competion. Norah Jones was very nice and it was fun to see Jager doing his thang. Lady Gaga-me with a spoon, but respect the effort to be creative. You can keep Justin Bieber and Eminem. I enjoyed Usher though. It was cool to have Esperanza comping with the High School band, but they should have let them play full out. It would have been something if they had Pat perform his Orchestrion at the Grammys! Now that would open some eyes. |

All good comments so far. I also enjoyed the opening tribute to Aretha Franklin, a few of those ladies I’ve never heard of and wow could they all belt it out. I never heard of Muse and I liked their performance as well as Arcade Fire, another first for me and I thought they were very good. |

It’s about time I put on some radio or MTV again,in stead of the old Jazzcd’s or internetjazzstations. Except for the jazz guys quoted in this tread, I’ve never heard a piece of music of those other artists(I guess). Lady Gaga? An egg? |

Also congrats to Stanley Clarke and his band. Lady Gaga was at the VMAs covered in meat. Now she is at the Grammys dressed as an egg. Two more red carpets and she will be a Denny’s Grand Slam breakfast. |

Good call Fred, I never would of connected those dots. No matter though I’ll take a rip of Eye in the Sky over anything else the artists in those categories had to offer. |

3 old timer performances...an unintelligible Dylan...Jagger owned the stage during a good rhythm and blues tune. Barbara Streisand was not the little teen that mesmerized us back in the day. Niel Young also took one home. |

Two thumbs up for Esperanza Spaulding...and in general it was a pleasant surprise to fine many of the ’best(s)’ to be congruent with my understanding of music. |

Loved Esperanza Spaulding beating out Justin Bieber for Best New Artist. Also loved Norah Jones, John Mayer, Keith Urban on Jolene. The Lady Antebellum song is a rip of Eye In the Sky. |

Hmmm, jazz won out over Justin. Who would have ever guessed that? Sorry that Pat’s name wasn’t in there somewhere. His number of awards is the third most ever won at the event. |

Yes, there’s fortunately much more to the grammys than what you see on TV. I just wish that more of it would make it to the airwaves. Jeff Beck won three, Herbie one as well and cheers to Esperanza Spaulding for the new artist upset win. |
