SUBJECT: This Is My Brain on Pat (or Music as Medicine) Back to Subjects

I’ll be having brain surgery soon to remove a rare type of tumor, and am contemplating a post-op playlist for my recovery. "Always and Forever", "Not to Be Forgotten" and "Look Ahead" [Secret Story] will provide a gentle beginning, but I could use some suggestions on where to go from there.

Bookmark and Share Roxanne -- I join in adding my prayers / highest intentions for your health. So much of Pat’s music is good medicine, as you well know, but I think the entire New Chautauqua record has a kind of healing narrative arc. As does the track As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls. Wishing you the best.

Bookmark and Share The Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden disc Beyond the Missouri Sky would be my choice. The entire recording is very mood altering.

Bookmark and Share further thought - I’d add Suena con Mexico. When Pat played this to close the Orchestrion show it was heavenly.

Bookmark and Share best wishes & I hope all goes well Roxanne. thank you for starting this thread - what is being said here resonates in a common way with so many for whom Pat’s music is the story of our lives. I totally agree with what’s been said below, in the sentiments expressed and in the selections of music. My kids ask me what my favourite song is - and more and more I think it’s First Circle - so hard to say. But anyhow, in addition to Always and Forever (wow) and Farmer’s trust (love it) I would add a few thoughts: although it’s brief, it’s a glimpse of beauty - Letter from Home. And also, Every Day I Thank you - hard to express in words how deeply some of these pieces touch me. Good luck Roaxanne and thank you for inviting us into this discussion.

Bookmark and Share Foper, a huge thumbs up re your message to all of us who are addicted to Pat’s music and creativity, and really what it means in our daily life, in the car or at home, or in times of stress, to have all that music with us. Really, I can’t express that sentiment any better !

Bookmark and Share I hope I’m not hijacking this thread by posting this. I don’t know if Pat reads this forum, but I hope he knows his music means more to so many of us than just something to listen to, or learn from musically (although for me Pat has been a guitar mentor to me). His music inspires so many of us. There’s an old saying that most folks of a certain age don’t have a point in their lives where they can’t place an Elton John song. Well for me, past the age of 17, there isn’t a point in my life where I can’t place a Pat Metheny song. I told my wife long ago that if I ever had any kind of major surgery to endlessly play Pat’s music. Even in my healthy state, Pat’s music inspires and calms me. For someone (Roxanne) to look to Pat’s music for healing and peace during a truly challenging time; I really hope Pat understands that his music means far more to us than just challenging our listening and entertainment.

Bookmark and Share And on the subject of a Music as Medicine, I’m afraid I’m very specific. .... I don’t know why i was totally drawn to Pat’s music back in the early 80’s, because before that I had vague preferences , like Steely Dan or the Beetles. But no one except oneI know is really likes Pat’s music, which I believe is a symptom of ’pop music’ ennui and most people don’t really listen, period. And I find I like most of Pat’s preferences, including John Adam’s Dr Atomic and of course many of those who Pat has collaborated with.

Bookmark and Share Hey Roxanne, I too, wish you a speedy recovery. I agree with Patsfan, that all of Pat’s music should be playing...When I am in different moods, different pieces hit me the hardest. Since you don’t know how you will be feeling, why not be prepared for anything? Again, I wish you the best!

Bookmark and Share roxanne--"Farmer’s Trust" from Travels comes to mind as a nice, quiet piece for recovery. Good luck with your surgery, you’re a brave person going through that, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Bookmark and Share ’First Circle’. I think this is probably his most inspirational piece. Everything on ’Secret Story’. ’The Way Up’.
