Not sure if any other Patheads braved the elements last weekend at Newport Jazz Fest, but the set with Kurt Rosenwinkle was worth it. It rained off and on all day Sat. and took us over an hour to get in the gates, but we finally arrived just in time for his hour long set. His playing was flawless and fluid and backing trio were excellent. Luckily he was under the tent of one of the side stages, so most listeners stayed dry. Afterwards I caught the Lincoln Center Big Band on the main stage. It stayed dry for most of their set of great jazz standards. The day finished up with a set by the anniversary collaboration Newport at 60 band consisting of Randy Brecker, Anat Cohen and Larry Grenadier, among others. All in all, great music, lousy weather and cool experience. Here’s hoping Newport Jazz Fest continues for at least another 60 years.
