Just listened to an excellent CD by jazz bass player Mike Pope - Lay Of the Land. Anyone else familiar with this jazz artist? Any other CD’s to recommend. Great stuff, love hearing good jazz music I have not heard before.

Bookmark and Share I had no idea he had his own albums out. Very nice material. Mike also played bass for Al DiMeola. Featured on the "Speak A Volcano"concert video. I think he did some live dates with Virgil Donati.

Bookmark and Share Check out his work with vibraphonist Joe Locke (who is on Mike’s record) - Live in Seattle and Signing, with the Joe Locke / Geoffrey Keezer Group are both stellar records, and while the material is largely Joe’s and Geoff’s, Mike plays his ass off (along with drummer Terreon Gully) throughout.

Bookmark and Share And I see by watching some You Tube vids that Mike played with Chick Corea’s Electrick Band. That’s an extremelly high level of musicianship. Very cool! Good luck to both of you Dave and Mike on your future endeavors.

Bookmark and Share Thanks for the kind words Tom Rudd. I play drums on the trio record but also play guitar. Good question hman01. I think for that reason, Mike has never done the Star Spangled Banner live :)

Bookmark and Share Hey,you guys are great photon man.But I was curious about one thing.I love the Star Spangled Banner played on vibes. But I’m sure that as jazz artists,if you play it live, you might go longer than 4:40.Does the audience stand for the whole time? :)

Bookmark and Share Tom, I know Mike’s music well. It helps that he is my brother. Check out his brand new release called "Cold Truth Warm Heart" and his first record "Walk Your Dogma" featuring a tune with Mike on lead guitar-piccolo bass and Michael Brecker trading choruses at the end that will knock your socks off. And, Mike plays piano on my trio record (Dave Pope Trio - "You and The Night and The Music") with John Patitucci on bass and we cover Pat’s "Sirabhorn". Also, there is an interesting video on TED.com of Mike and Pat being interviewed by Dr. Charles Limb discussing brain function when improvising music. Hope this gives you some resources!
