I will be going to four shows at S.P.A.C.E. in Evanston in May. May 5th Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge, May 6 Nels Cline Singers and May 11 John Scofield Organic Trio. Also I will be seeing Stephan Crump’s Rosetta Trio (Liberty Ellman on electric guitar and Jamie Fox on acoustic guitar). Hope I don’t have a guitar overdose.

Bookmark and Share Likewise, Marc. Also ran into several friends I hadn’t seen in awhile, so that was fun. Man, what a concert! Music just doesn’t get any better than that. I love how Scofield has fully integrated the whole electric blues guitar/Albert King vernacular into a jazz context; he can really make the guitar talk and squawk. And Goldings is one of my four or five favorite living keyboardists; a true B3 master ... one foot on the volume pedal, the other on bass pedal taps and punches, hands walking bass, comping, playing melodies and soloing, pulling drawbars, changing Leslie speed ... it’s like the Wizard of Oz: "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!" pushing levers and pulling ropes. But you close your eyes and it’s just music!

Bookmark and Share Have fun Marc & Fred. Sco is always great but I’ve never seen Nels Cline, though I’m a big fan. His Nels Cline Singers stuff is exceptional but a favorite of mine is the live, improvisational project Nels did with Gregg Bendian, "Interstellar Space Revisited". A screaming, live interpretation of Coltrane’s classic LP. The sound and atmosphere created by these 2 guys, at times, is simply stunning. Check it out, if you are so inclined.
