Question:

I just got my copy of The Advancing Guitarist by Mick Goodrick. Amazon.com lists Pat Metheny as a "Contributor". I've only had the book for a few hours (it was a Xmas present), but I was somewhat disappointed to see your name mentioned only in the dedication.

Can you describe your involvement in the composition of the book? Any particular sections that you feel deserve more attention than others? Are there any other books that you would recommend for a somewhat lame but aspiring guitarist and improvisor?

Pat’s Answer:

hi bob,

to me, mick's book is probably one of the best resources out there for guitarists who are interested in improvisation to expand their horizons conceptually.

my involvement in it was simply one of being a kind of cheerleader - mick has been a friend of mine for many years and he had been threatening to organize his thoughts into book form for as long as i had known him. basically, i just encouraged him to go ahead and do it, and i am so glad he did - it is a really useful contribution to the ongoing development of the instrument and i know that it has inspired a lot of players with it - and will for generations to come; most of what he addresses in there is absolutely timeless. his little mention of me at the top was a real honor....

best from pat
