Question:

I was wondering what you think about women in jazz. There are some wonderful women jazz musicians out there, but clearly not as many women as men, and they seem to be more accepted in the role of the singer. Why do you think this is so (if you think this is so)?

Pat’s Answer:

there are so many great women musicians- one of my favorites is terry lynn carrington who was the drummer on the record that i made with gary thomas a few years ago. i also like marilyn crispell, carla bley, maria schnieder, jane ira bloom, and of course emily remler was amazing. it seems to be very accepted now- all we need is more women putting in the time to get really good.
