The music on Gary Burton’s brand new CD just blows me away! Just excellent writing and playing. The CD is called Guided Tour. I will be seeing this quartet at end of September in Boston! |

I caught their show when they came to Evanston , IL.
It was even better than their previous show at the same venue a year plus before. All four played incredible solos and were very tight as a group. Antonio was incredible as always. Julian was given a long solo that was very unique. Burton didn’t steal the spotlight and gave everyone solo space and some trio stuff when he didn’t play.

Enjoy the book "naut".I liked all the stories he told about working with
various musicians.Some were pretty comical.

Just started the memoir, hman. Good read so far. I liked his first meeting with Miles: "Thanks, kid." hehe Will try to finish it during the next week or so. I’m a slow reader sometimes.

@hman01 - Yes. It’s called "Learning to Listen," and A-zon says it’s due out Sept. 3.
@patsfan - I was only teasing akakak about his handle. ;)
I hope Gary tours west of the Rockies with this band. His website only lists venues east of the Big Wall. (There’s a vid or two of this band at youboob.)

This album blows me away. For anyone who has not heard this yet it is one of the best new recordings I have heard this year. Guitarist Julian Lage’s playing has matured so much. The improvisations on this album are incredible. Even Gary sounds energized and his playing is fantastic. The album has Steve Colley on bass and Antonio Sanchez on drums. If you have not picked this up yet I recommend it strongly.

Can’t wait to hear it ... heard this quartet live last year and it’s one of Gary’s best bands ever.

This is a terrific recording. I caught them live a while back with Antonio Sanchez on drums showing what a superb sideman he can be and Scott Colley on bass. But the real star is Julian Lage - a stunning guitarist. No one fills this role better and this should be great performance. Cheers John

Who in the hell wants to listen to a
cat coughing up a furball ???
Seriously, Gary Burton is always at
the top of my list. Wish I were in
Boston.

Agreed. It’s another step up from the Comon Ground cd which was tremendous in it’s on right. Can’t wait to see them in Philly in Oct.

You got that right, akakak (no slight intended, but that sounds like a cat coughing up a furball ;Þ ). Love this record. Julian’s amazing, as are Gary and the rest of the band. Don’t forget: Gary’s autobio comes out early next month.
