on the other hand, the interplay between Pat and Chris on Signals is as good or better then anything Pat did with MB or OC (my opinion, of course).

now that the tour is almost over , it’s nice to see that while the emphasis of the group was on new material, including an adaption of orchestrian for the band, Pal also covered songs like Song X and 2 Folk Songs. A live compilation is coming maybe ?

I agree with Hambone, Metheny never ceases to amaze me with his writing, playing and touring. I keep expecting him to finally run out of gas, but I doubt he ever will.

Thanks for the review John. How amazing is Pat that he can shift gears from the duet shows he did with Larry and write 20 new songs for a quartet in less time than most musicians would probably come up with one! I’m sure they’ll be adding more to the mix as time goes by too.

Upon review, I don’t care what they play as long as they do and hopefully it all gets recorded somewhere down the line.

I got a chance to Pat with the Unity Band last week at a small club in upstate New York and as you would expect, they were excellent. Pat wrote about 20 new tunes for the group and these made up the bulk of the 2 shows they played. As is the norm when Pat plays brand new material none of these tunes had titles yet and he just called them #6, #13, etc. The ones I heard were each little different in terms of style and tempo and were well-suited for the styles of these particular musicians. Pat sounded great on everything even though he was reading music off the chart most of the night. The rest of the group sounded good too - especially Antonio Sanchez - but as might be expected Chris Potter and Ben Williams seemed a little tentative as they were playing new material in a relatively unfamiliar setting. However, this was hardly noticeable and the group sounded great together and will, of course, improve greatly once they get a chance to play together more. I look forward to seeing them again in a few months to hear the difference.
All in all it was a great evening of music and I was fortunate to see them in such an intimate setting. Anyone who gets the chance to see this group live when they go on tour this summer is in for a real treat.

I’m really looking forward to their stops in Pa and hearing Pat play with a sax player again. I thought the trio/quartet tour with David Sanchez was great but the quartet set was too short. I never got to see Pat with Brecker besides Joni’s S&L tour, but this will be the next best thing.

Even if they played any old material it would sound new played by different people.
New material would fine also.
Chris plays many different instruments, one of which is the bass clarinet. I’m hoping they come to Michigan, so far the only US dates are on the East Coast.

I absolutely agree - there should be all new material with this project adn not a review of 8081! Nothing will compare to 8081, but 8081 has been done already. Each of Pats projects are unique in some way, and i don’t doubt this project will be unique as well.

Initial listenings suggest all new material is to be played on the tour - to which I can only say - hallelujah! Waiting for the west coast bookings.

Not to be contrarian, but I hope they won’t do any of the stuff from 80/81. PM and Brecker played all that stuff on their tours together. I really hope we’ll hear all new material for this band.

This lineup should do a week at Birdland or something. I’m hoping Pat’s going to bring out lots of new compositions for this.

I caught Chris Potter with his trio with Larry Grenadier and Marcus Gilmore Roy Haynes grandson). Incredible trio and Potter is all over the place. One of my favorite saxophonists. Will be a hell of a show with Pat.

Ben Williams is a Phenomenal bass player. Played with Pat and Anonio Sanchez as trio in Mexico City. Can’t wait to hear this. Hopefully there will be a CD.

Wouldn’t it be a fun thing for them to reprise a couple 80/81 tunes for this? Maybe get Joshua Redman to play his dads parts? God, that would just rock.

Chris, when they played together on Migration it was with Chris Potter and David Sanchez and Pat was only on a couple of tracks. I always liked Pats playing with Micheal Brecker, wouldn’t it be cool if Pat and Chris play some of the music that Pat and Michael used to play ?

Mugsy, Here’s the information from the pm.com holiday email:

It seems that Pat has a new group that will be gigging (at least) in europe. It’s apparently called the Pat Metheny Unity Band and it features Chris Potter, Ben Williams and Antonio. There was also a rumour floating around that Pat would do an entry for John Zorn’s "Book of Angels" next year. Has anyone heard about this? It would be great if it were to actually happen.

Hell yeah. Potter’s style is modern
post-bop and will stretch PM into some
new territory. Potter has been playing
with Adam Rodgers who is technically
great but whom I find a bit "cold." This
will be a killer team.
