Pat mentioned on the last gig I saw that he now
has put 53 records out. That’s a lot, but as a fan,
there are several records that I would have
loved and could have been easily released, but
never were. My top three wishlist is below,
interested to hear other people’s....
1. Soundtrack album of Living is Easy With Eyes
Closed, his last work with Charlie Haden and
winner of a Goya award for best soundtrack.
2. A live double from the late 2010s quartet,
surely recordings were made?
3. A collection of his collaborations with Esbjörn
Svensson. Some are available on the legitimate
website Live Jazz Lounge, but an official, physical
release could have been great |

There’s a few things that I’d like to have but they might be good as DVD/Blu Ray releases as they were never
released in that format in the US. "More Travels." "The Parallel Realities Concert" with Jack DeJohnette, Herbie
Hancock & Dave Holland, "The Secret Story Live Concert" recorded in NJ. It would be really nice to have that since
Mark Ledford & Jim Beard are no longer among us.
Then there’s the pending announcement on where further releases from Metheny Group Productions will be
coming from as well as back catalog. BMG shuttered Modern Recordings and dropped some other labels &
personnel. Among the business restructuring changes, BMG now manage their own digital release distribution
worldwide. The physical format distribution agreement with Warner ended in 2024. Universal will distribute
physical formats from here out.

As I have said, the soundtrack is up on YouTube from time to time, it is no worse quality than mp3, unfortunately the
page for the film (you can check on the Pat Metheny Database) is inactive. Pat has said it in a recent interview that
the new Side-Eye record ir in the bag, and yes, I also read him saying that it’s going to include 20+ artists, very
curious, I was hoping that release this year, but it is highly unlikely now that there is no new tour. I cannot remember
if Pat mentioned it or read it somewhere as a rumour, but there has been talks of a big band project, he had a one
off show back in 2003 with the Metropole Orchestra. As for his Songbook Qtet, the From this place record is
originally a quartet record, all the rest is a later addition, you can read about Pat’s description on this page, really
fascinating. Personally, I found that Qtet too retrospective and they never took the new material on the road, but it
was indeed a great Qtet. Since this year is the twentieth anniversary of The Way Up project, to cheer myself up, I
have bought the other two missing cover version of the TWU album, one from the States, and the yellow pole version
from Japan, so now I have a 72min 5 sec version too! Best, A

I just visited the Pat Metheny Database and found some information regarding Pat’s Concert Chronology. The Pat
Metheny Group (or Quartet) with Pat, Lyle, Steve Rodby and Antonio Sanchez were on tour. On January 7th and
10th
a live recording was made at The Blue Note Tokyo. In 2017 the PM New Quartet (Pat, Gwilym Simcock, Linda May
Han Oh & Antonio Sanchez) was on a World tour. Pat’s activity in 2019 was very extensive with solo shows, a duos
and trios band with Gwilym Simcock and Linda May Han Oh, Side-Eye (James Francies & Nate Smith).
Several years ago I read Pat was going to have another Side-Eye record with multiple trios with close to twenty Pat
discoveries. Whatever is next will be great. One of these years I expect to see a Pat Metheny Big Band record and
tour. It wouldn’t be difficult for Pat put together a band of jazz veterans and/or new discoveries on his radar. It was
very rare to have no records released between 2017 - 2019. COVID was probably partly responsible for the solo
records. I wish there was a live record/video from the New Quartet Tour. Years ago there was a record with Pat
and Sonny Rollins, but it’s been banned for release.

Atttila thank you very much for your very
detailed and informative answer. I appreciate
that. I had no idea that soundtrack was
available on mp3, I would have loved to have
that. As for the live quartet, I think you
misunderstood me, I think you were talking
about the PMG Songbook tour whereas I was
referring to the quartet with Linda and Gwilym
10 years later. Obviously it would be great to
have releases for both!! However my thinking
was always that there was this incredibly fertile
period for Pat between The Way Up (05) and Kin
(14) and then practically no new music at all
between Kin and From This Place (20), so since
that quartet were touring for a few years in that
fallow period I never understood why there was
no live release of those tours which presumably
would have been a ’quick win’ in a period with
little else released by Pat. Best, Martin

Well, the first was available for a long time as a free mp3 download (only) on the film’s website – no longer available
–, but I guess you can still find it on YouTube. It’s very repetitive, that might be the reason (?) why Pat never
consented to a proper release. Pat did talk in an interview in a while back about releasing the second one – he did
not mention if it was going to be a double album, but there were rumours that it might be from the Tokyo shows, I
think in the Blue Note in 2009, but it hasn’t happened so far, and somehow I’ve got the feeling that it may not ever
happen, unless there will be a Metheny archives series similar to the on Joni Mitchell has and in which last year
another complete Shadows and Light concert was actually released with some rehearsal tunes as well, great stuff.
The third I don’t think will ever happen, but every now and then the concert they did together in 2003, I think, at Jazz
Baltica, pops up on video channels, great stuff, he actually played with Esbjörn in another lineup as well at the same
festival – and there is a tiny cut from the previous show in the official Esbjörn documentary. It would be great if in
years like this one, when there is no new record-related tour, but Pat is understandably taking it easy on touring, a
couple of oldies like the PMG concert you mention or the trio he did last year with Ron Carter and Joe Dyson in Tokyo
Blue Note – and of which Pat has mentioned a potential release – would be released, because even though we have
no reason to complain about Pat’s output, it’s just never enough! Personally I would love to hear this very special trio
on a double album, with some duos with Carter at the beginning. I only heard 14 seconds of the rehearsal video that
was up on FB some time ago and it sounded golden. But Pat also talked a while back about putting out a live album
from the Metheny/Mehldau tour, there were also talks back then at Nonesuch about putting out The Complete
Metheny/Mehldau Sessions double record – three quartet tunes were never released from these recording dates
(they did 12 duo, 12 qtet, the first bunch is completely released on their two albums), he has often talked about
having another round with Brad and the list goes on. I think, he hasn’t even released all the material he has already
recorded in the past ten years (before the release of From This Place he talked about about 8-10 projects in an
interview out of which he said 5 were completely ready [must have been "From This Pace"; "Road to the Sun", but
Dream Box and MoonDial were both somewhat spontaneous releases, Side-Eye also, considering that it is a live
record, so I wonder what the other 3 ready stuff that must have been made in 2017-2019 were, in the period, where
we had three very hard years without any releases]. There is certainly a new Side-Eye record lined up – he talked
about it briefly in several recent interviews – and who knows what else he is sitting on. One thing is for sure, I am
ready for all of them! Best wishes, Attila
