Hey all, I’m just listening to SON cd as I’m writing
this. Can’t believe that this record is almost 23
years now. I particularly love this album, cos of
the new members of PMG Cuong Vu and Antonio
Sanchez. What a strong addition to the group! A
solid record with some classic and familiar PMG
tunes, and I got the chance to see them in
concert in Toronto back in 2002, I guess, at
Hummingbird Center if I’m not mistaken. What
do you guys think of this album? |

Antonio should be my favourite drummer, we both share the same name and he is mexican, a country were I have had such woderful times of my life. But I prefer Paul and his "happy drums". I think he propelled the band incredibly with a frenetic but subtle and elegant rythm. But anyway I have no idea about drumming.

ProfPlumb: Several years ago, at allaboutjazz.com there was a very good and extensive article on all three of the Pat
Metheny Group drummers Danny Gottlieb, Paul Wertico and Antonio Sanchez. I have read and heard many
interviews with Pat where he has high praise for Antonio. He is my favorite also and has always impressed me live
and on all Pat’s records and any other records he is on. I have three drumheads that 41 Jazz drummers signed and
Antonio was at the top of my must sign list. I caught his band Migration when they were in Chicago, and I got
backstage to have him sign a drumhead.

Antonio Sanchez might be the most dynamic, complete drummer in the PMG lineup. His arrival elevates these
compositions to new heights. Cuong Vu was a perfect fit for this project also. His patience and prioritization of
melody in improvisation makes his contribution essential. I love the prog shred of “As it Is” and the midwestern
energy of “The Gathering Sky.” I never tire of listening to this record!

It’s my personal favourite Pat record.
Firstly because it runs like a film, the first track
sounds like an introduction and the final track is
a glorious climax. There are no fillers or jarring
moments like ’Forward March’.
Secondly because, whilst still mellifluous and
accessible like the late 80s records, it has
greater intensity and integrity in the jazz
soloing, no doubt spurred on by the new band
members.
It is recorded beautifully. The artwork is
beautiful. It is perfect.

Great Interview, Mark. Thoughtful questions and the usual reflective & insightful responses from Metheny. I smiled
when Pat said (at the end), "We had a great night in Vancouver last night." Hey, I was at that Speaking of Now show in
Vancouver. Yeah, it was a great night! Thanks for posting the interview.

Excellent interview, Mark. Nicely done. Long ago I asked Pat about the album title, and if it had anything to do with his then recent children. "SoN alluding to son?" He wouldn’t go there. / Thanks for pointing the way over to the vid.

Speaking of Now is undeniable. The aesthetic seems to pull from a lot of influences, but it also has its own thing. The
overall soundscape is spectacular. It floats in space, a galaxy of good vibes. Sounds incredible a couple of decades
after it was released. I can imagine it finding new fans decades from now. Has everything you might want in a PMG
record: superb compositions, sublime solos, breathtaking performances.

One of my all-time faves. I would LOVE a "Songbook" of this album. - charts are not available that I have been able to
find. I spent $60 for a big-band arrangement of "You", but that was all I could find. Talk about a job-of-work to get
what I wanted out of a complex song and arrangement. Saw the tour in Columbus OH, and got a great photo of the
stage, and one of Pat and myself.

I agree that is another great PMG record. Pat has always had great drummers in all his various bands, but Antonio
brought a better and fuller sound to the band. I loved Wertico and Gottlieb in the PMG, but Antonio was and is my
favorite. There is a great mini review of SoN above at Media: Music.

A most wonderful album. Not only the inclusion of new band members Antonio and Cuong in the mix.....but also
Richard Bona too. His presence at the gig was phenomenal. Some preeminent charts of all sorts on this album.
