Absurd how easy it is to name seven sublime Metheny tunes. Tunes that could almost be secular hymns
because they’re so beautiful. Tomorrow I could probably name seven different tunes. Today they are: Sueno Con
Mexico, Mas Alla (Beyond), Dream of the Return, September 15th (this one with Mays), So May It Secretly Begin, When We Were Free &
Same River. Anyone else? |

Many of the tunes coming up here induce (for me) a sense of flow, bliss & timelessness. Seven more: Into the Dream,
We Had a Sister, In Her Family, Afternoon, Goin’ Ahead, Last Train Home, Travels.

Always and Forever, Back in Time, Don’t Forget. Not necessarily in that order.

I’ve read that "Praise" was conceived as a secular hymn. That would be my first
suggestion for this list.

This is an impossible game! But as you mention the word ’seven’ I give you Seven Days from the Quartet album, a
beautifully haunting piece fully showcasing Pat and Lyle’s synergy and harmonic sense of adventure. Leaving aside
classics like Minuano, AYGWM, Have You Heard, Phase Dance and First Circle, I would add a further six underrated
PM and PM/LM tunes: Too Soon Tomorrow; Jaco; Wide and Far (from From this Place); Sometimes I See; You; Are We
There Yet? Then there’s Au Lait, And Then She Knew, Girls Next Door... on we go forever!

the end with the female choir voicings).....September 15th (with the chosen one....Lyle).....Always and Forever (with
maestro Toots Thielemans)....Born....You.....
