John McLaughlin has finally been inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame, an honor, IMO, long overdue, but so richly deserved. I can’t think of any other living jazz musician who warrants the induction more than John. Having seen him decades ago with the Gurtu trio, and three times later with two incarnations of Shakti, I’ll say with no hesitation that his live shows are mind-boggling. Reportedly, Charles Lloyd said of McLaughlin: “John is a deep sensitive. He knows that we live in a world that’s gone mad and he’s looking for the right note.” Congrats Maestro McLaughlin!
