Jazz guitarist Russell Malone passed away on August 23rd at sixty-years-old. He was one of my
favorite jazz guitarists and very nice person. I frequently caught his shows with his quartet at the Jazz Showcase and
saw him last year with Ron Carter’s Golden Striker Trio. He will be greatly missed by jazz fans and fellow jazz
musicians everywhere. |

For those of you not familiar with Russell Malone I have several records of his that you should check out. One of my
favorite Russell Malone Quartet records is Love Looks Good On You. He toured and recorded with pianist Benny
Green and the Benny Green Trio disc These Are Soulful Days (with Christian McBride and Russell) is exceptional.
Russell was in Ron Carter’s Golden Striker Trio from its inception until his death in August. You need to listen to Ron
Carter Golden Striker, Live at Theaterstubchen, kassel. It’s a great recording of a very special trio (bass, piano and
guitar) and is a great live recording. Ron Carter is a very demanding leader and for Russell to be with the trio that
long is very impressive. I was very privileged to catch the trio live three times and once a Ron & Russell duo show.
Russell also was a great person and was always fun to talk to. He had a great sense of humor and was always smiling.

There is an excellent article about Russell Malone online at the London Jazz News. Mentions his prolific discography
and concerts as a leader and sideman with jazz legends like Ron Carter, Benny Green and Sonny Rollins. It also
mentions what a gentleman and great sense of humor Russell had. I saw him numerous times with his quartet and
with Ron Carter’s trio (Golden Striker). I always enjoyed the shows and my conversations I had with him. He will be
missed by me and his many fans and fellow musicians.
