facing west : I received the book last week and briefly skimmed through it. It looks it will be very interesting and a
good read. I am still reading the book on Pat growing up in Kansas City, so this book is in the Batter’s Box. I did read
the part of Big Chief Harrison’s Celebration of Life with Donald Harrison Jr. performing at the service. Very moving
and special bond with his Father. When I see Donald next year at the Jazz Showcase I will have him sign the book. I
have a nice collection of books on Jazz autobiographies that I got signed. Gary Burton, Ron Carter, Pat Martino,
Randy Weston, Benny Golson and Jimmy Heath are in my collection so far.

Marc -- yes, the history and tradition of the Harrison family is deep and profound. Just so interesting that Joe Dyson
brings some of that tradition into Side Eye. Man, you are fortunate to be going to that gig. What is it, Friday night in
Chicago? That should be one of the highlights of the tour.

facing west : Several years ago I saw Donald Harrison with his quartet at the Chicago Jazz Festival. He had Willie
Pickens, a great Chicago pianist play one tune and the last art of the show he added the Mardi Gras Indians. Donald
is the Chief for one of the New Orleans tribes. They were wearing really beautiful large costumes (search on Google)
and were playing various percussion instruments and singing. I took a lot of photographs of the show and had
several that I showed to Donald next time I saw him. A friend of mine has a book on Donald Harrison Sr., a much
revered musician in New Orleans. The book is called "Big Chief Harrison and the Mardi Gras Indians.

Another cool thing about Donald Harrison Jr.: his nephew is Christian Scott. There’s nothing about Christian Scott’s
music I don’t like. The family is basically American Royalty. For some reason, when I first heard Christian Scott I kind
thought he must be out of London--just because the London jazz was absolutely killing before the pandemic. Curious
to see how London reacts when Side Eye hits town. One show only. Man, everyone in the audience will probably
either be a DJ or in a band.

Marc - thanks for the recommendations. Just listened to all of Quantum Leap. Great stuff, and great to hear Joe
Dyson in that setting. Donald Harrison - love everything about him. Just a living treasure and a great human being.
Happened to be awake at 4 in the morning recently, so I watched a Netflix documentary on Biggie Smalls (Biggie: I
Got a Story to Tell). Donald Harrison shows up in it. He moved to Brooklyn because of the music scene, and was a
mentor to Biggie when he was a kid, and later tried to get him off the street. Respect to musicians like Donald
Harrison and Ron Carter for recognizing that jazz is mother to hip hop.

facing west : I just finished listening to Donald Harrison, Jr. Quantum Leap cd from 2012. A 22 year old Joe Dyson
plays drums on the CD. The record is not usual Donald Harrison record as he blends Jazz with Hip Hop, R & B, Rock
Afro- New Orleans and more . Do checkout the song Make Some Noise where Joe cuts loose on one of the mostly
Jazz tracks on the cd. A 26 year old Sullivan Fortner is on the same song and most of the record. Also checkout Water
Meter, another Jazz tune that features Joe again. Joe is also playing drums on Sullivan Fortner’s Aria record from
2015. In the liner notes Sullivan said he has known Joe since grade school and told Joe then that he wants him on his
first record.

facing west : I have seen Joe with Donald Harrison at least back in 2012. Donald is one of this year’s NEA Jazz Masters
( for Advocacy) as he has been teaching future Jazz musicians in many places in New Orleans. He also is a lot like Art
Blakey, since he gets young musicians to play in his band and nurtures them until they go on to lead their own bands
or get a chance to play with someone like Pat. Joe was very good back in 2012, but seemed to get better each year
that I hear him. I will let you know where else to hear him on recordings.

Marc - I’m just getting a sense of how musically deep this version of Side Eye is. You are clearly well along the
musical curve there. Especially getting an opportunity to see Joe Dyson in different musical settings (wow, Donald
Harrison!). Dyson’s website describes his debut album, Look Within, as ’a blend of gospel, jazz, R&B, AFRO New
Orleans Rhythm and Spiritual Philosophies.’ I had to look up the term ’second line’ to refresh my memory of what
that’s all about. Interesting that Billy Higgins (Rejoicing) was considered a second-line-influenced drummer. So cool
that Pat is connecting to that New Orleans thing in such a deep way. Again, Side Eye (V1.1V) ... what a band! This
tour is going to be something special.

facing west : In 2019 I caught Side-Eye at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. This was the version with
James Francies and Marcus Gilmore and was my favorite show that year (235 bands). Later in the year I caught
James Francies and his band in the Chicago suburbs. Very good show and diverse. I have been hearing Joe Dyson
for many years now with Donald Harrison’s group. I watched him grow as a drummer every year. I heard Joe in
one of seventeen shows in 2020 with the Donny McCaslin Trio. It was a much different gig for Joe and he was
excellent that night. Pat said he wanted Joe for Side-Eye partially due to his New Orleans style of drumming
(Second Line?). This will be another great version of Side-Eye.

Just listening to Side Eye band member James Francies’ latest album, Purest Form. Highly recommended, if you get a
chance to hear it. Totally has his own musical voice, mature, melodic & progressive. One of the tracks is called ’Blown
Away’, which sums things up. Sheds a lot of musical light on Side Eye. I envy everyone going to check out this band
live.

Hey Marc - thanks for turning me on to the band’s bio page on Ted Kurland’s site. Wow, what a band. Helps me
hear the album in a whole new way. I always hoped that Pat would play with guys who grew up on hip hop, and
here we are. And it makes sense that James Frances is tight with Questlove. Pat recently did a great interview on
Questlove’s podcast, and you could hear the mutual respect (also, Questlove just directed the doc, Summer of
Soul, so there’s that). And Joe Dyson was on one of my favorite series, Treme. That band is absolutely killer. Hope
they record some more on the road. Also, a new Metheny promo for the album just went up on YouTube. On it,
Pat says that he has hundreds of hours of tape of him playing mostly standards with young guns who come
through New York. It would be cool if Pat put that music out one day.

I just received a replacement copy of the defective CD I received earlier in September. Has anyone else got a copy
that won’t play?

There is a great Side-Eye Band Bio at Pat’s agent’s website thekurlandagency.com. Three pages on James Francies
and Joe Dyson, who both have been playing music since they were four years old. Lots of other cool stuff on Pat at
the website.

Just impossible to predict where Pat’s going to go, but he keeps producing killer records. The sound is amazing.
Really jumps out of my Mission speakers. As producers, Pat and Steve Rodby are great at capturing live sound.
Lodger is surprisingly blues-rock. It Starts When We Disappear, Better Days Ahead and Zenith Blue are also great
tracks. Bright Size Life easily stands the test of time. And so does Pat. Did someone say this is kind of mellow? For
me, it’s got a real New York vibe. Turn it up!

Marc, I’m sure you’re aware, but Pat played with Larry Goldings on Michael Brecker’s "Time Is of the Essence"--a quartet, of course, not a trio. In fact, that’s the recording on which "Timeline" first (?) appeared. Pat’s "As I Am" also appears on that recording. Best regards

Same here Marc Nebo. I’m enjoying everything on this album, but especially those organ trio sounds!

I really enjoyed the track with James Francies playing organ. Pat on guitar and Marcus on drums. I think that’s the
first time I have heard Pat do an organ trio tune (with no other keyboards). It was great and I would like to see him
do a total organ trio record. If he couldn’t do it with Joey DeFrancesco or Larry Goldings, James Francies would work
very well. I am sure Pat could write some new songs and some of his classic tunes could be reworked for organ trio.
Several songs that would be cool to hear, James, Are You Going With Me? and Question and Answer would work.

The new album is fantastic! It’s like he’s
rolled all his music together and
reassembled it into something totally
new. Great stuff!

I just went to finish listening to the CD for the second time and it won’t play. I tried two other CDs without any
problems. Has anyone else had a problem with your disc?

I just received the new CD and it’s everything I expected and more. Another excellent trio record that sounds like a
larger band because of all James Francies instruments and Pat’s Orchestrionic (smaller version of Orchestrion).
The photos of James Francies shows a large keyboard setup with organ, piano, keyboards and Synth Bass. Lyle will
always be very special to Pat, but James an incredible musician who I expect Pat will be utilizing a lot. Overall
mostly mellow, but elegant compositions and new arrangements of songs going back to Bright Size Life. Great
drumming by Marcus Gilmore throughout the record. I believe a DVD of the record will be coming out this year or
in 2022. In the Credits "Video Produced and Edited by Steve Rodby" and no mention of credit for the photos of the
musicians. I am ready to Pre-Order the DVD today. It would clear up who is playing what as Pat and James share
Bass responsibilities. I need to listen to the CD a few more times before I rate it in my Top Ten List,

Here’s a full review of the new demo track. The question about the CD title is answered, too.

Marshall, I believe the V1. IV refers to this being the first Side-Eye album (V1) and the 4th version or configuration of
the group (IV). Pat’s played with different musicians since he began this project. So this would be the 4th mix of
personnel. Hope that answers it :)

From Jazzwise’s website:
Twenty time-Grammy-winning guitarist Pat Metheny makes an emphatic return to live performance as he embarks
on a 100 date world tour this autumn, with a sole UK date confirmed for 12 June 2022 at London’s Eventim
Hammersmith Apollo.
As announced in the July issue of Jazzwise, Metheny has selected two rising star virtuosos in the form of Blue Note
signed keyboardist James Francies and versatile New Orleans drum talent Joe Dyson to join him on the road, while
the accompanying live album Side-Eye NYC (V1.IV), which is released on 10 September on his new label BMG Modern
Recordings, features acclaimed sticksman Marcus Gilmore.
Recorded just before the pandemic, SIDE-EYE NYC balances new originals with inventive reworkings of some of
Metheny’s most cherished compositions such as ‘Timeline’, which he previously recorded with Michael Brecker and
Elvin Jones.
The new trio seamlessly moves between the compact and the expansive with gritty acoustic jazz contrasting with
contemporaneous electronic textures, the set list is ‘It Starts When It Disappears’, ‘Better Days Ahead’, ‘Timeline’,
‘Bright Size Life’, ‘Lodger’, ‘Sirabhorn’, ‘Turnaround’ and ‘Zenith Blues’.

I recently received an email with a short review of the new record which was recorded live in NYC back in 2019. There
is some new material, but also Pat’s classic songs reworked for the Side-Eye trio. They go all the way back to Bright
Size Life. As always with Pat, it should be an excellent addition to his Discography. I look forward to hearing it and
seeing the band in October in Chicago.

It Starts When We Disappear is available on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSDaO1BLhqo. It feels to me like a combo of Orchestrion and
The Way Up in a trio setting, along with some...new sounds.
Anybody know why the album is titled "Side Eye - (V1.IV)? What is the "V1.IV" referring to?
