If you haven’t heard Nando Lauria’s beautiful Brazilian music, you need to get your hands (and ears) on it before
you take another breath. Particularly in ugly times, you need something lovely and inspiring in your life.
Nando plays various instruments and sings like an angel. He toured with the last incarnation of the Pat Metheny
Group, on the Way Up tour. Nando recorded two albums of his own, and they’re available as 2-for-1, a buy you
can’t pass up. If you loved the PMG sound in the mid to late-eighties (First Circle, Still Life talking, Letter from
Home), you’ll love this. On both albums, every track is a winner. Lyle Mays stops by to help out on a track or two,
also.
I have no idea what happened to Nando within the music industry. These albums are a decade or two old, and he
doesn’t seem to have done anything else. Anyone know? |

interesting how many instruments he plays on this, one thing I noticed is how versatile the musicians who play with
Pat are in that respect, particularly in the PMG . Also note the artists how who have played with Pat that play on this
album.

Thanks, frank. I’ll edit that down to what I want. I often use allmusic too; not sure why I didn’t on this occasion. I appreciate your effort & thoughtfulness. Better Days Ahead!

It’s a puzzle to me what happened to Nando, why he doesn’t seem to be active in music in the last few years.
After i got hooked on Pat’s Group work, I was desperate for more between releases and of course found that nobody
else has the sound. It’s like finding another Beatles or another Sinatra. But Nando’s work came perhaps closest to
the late eighties Metheny sound, so immersed in Brazilian melody and passion. It’s not as brilliant from a
compositional perspective, of course, but it’s excellent and consistent in that excellence. Far too good for him to just
disappear from the scene. My wife and I have listened over and over, and are thankful at least for what we have.

Thanks for your rec and enthusiasm on this 2-fer, saxond. I couldn’t find a hard copy of the discs, so d/l the mp3s and burned a copy. Not as high a bit rate as I prefer, but it’s amazoo, so what’re you gonna do? Both are indeed joyous albums. I must’ve seen Nando on TWU tour, but I wasn’t aware of who he was back then. Now I’m listening to "Revival" off "Novo Brasil," which has some sonic affinity with "First Circle." Much of both records shows Pat’s influence, which isn’t surprising. BTW, I located the personnel on "Points of View," but if anyone can list who plays on "Novo Brasil" it would be much appreciated.

Check out a tune of his. Sonho, there is an accompanying guitarist that sounds very familiar on it.
Over the years of Pat’s groups and trios I’ve tried to find band members own material. when I first saw on DVD The Way Up I checked out Nando and Gregoire Maret, I have been a fan Toots for ages so Maret can fill that space for me now
Of course Lyle’s there’s work, David Blamires has some interesting stuff. Steve Rodby lead me to The Impossible Gentlemen.
That lead to Gwilym Simcock, Pedro Aznar, particularly a track with Pat and Dan Gottlieb called Verano en Nueva Inglaterra. Paul Wertico’s stuff is mainly avant-garde as with Cuong Vu

"Good Question" is one of his best songs. I heard it several years after "First Circle" and it reminded me of it. I lost track of him for several years and was thrilled to see him on "The Way Up" tour, but I haven’t seen or heard anything about him since then.
