Question:

Sorry, just one more question. Have you ever had the opportunity to play with Steve Gadd? I had the pleasure of interviewing him for a local arts publication here in Rochester back in 2006 (that sadly never got printed due to publisher stupidity, but that’s a story for another day), and he was the nicest guy, very humble. When researching his discography, I couldn’t find any instances of him playing with you, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen at some point. Rochester is his hometown, and he’s coming back in June to play at the Xerox Int’l Jazz Festival here.

Pat’s Answer:

Hi Dave, I have known Steve for decades, but I don't think we have ever actually had the chance to play together. He is one of the greatest drummers ever in my opinion. There are so many areas of music that he brings to the kit; a sense of real orchestration in his parts, unbelievable time, a great sound and a really unique touch. He is one of the few guys who really can play deep backbeat oriented music and also tip in a more straight-ahead kind of way with a genuine authority. And also, as you said, a really great guy. Hopefully somewhere along the way we will get the chance to play.
