I missed the first round Gary and his new quartet made to Philly a couple of years ago and made sure I didn’t this time. Tremendous show. I’d already seen Antonio several times now with Pat and Gary and Scott Colley when they toured with Pat a few years ago. But it was my first chance to see Julian Lage and I was very impressed. Hard to believe he’s been playing with Gary since he was 12. Hope they continue to record and tour again.

Bookmark and Share Wow, that’s almost one show every 3 nights. I can’t compete with that schedule, but I do see a lot of good music and am lucky to be in a geographic area that has a lot to offer. Keep posting your reviews and I will mine also.

Bookmark and Share Hambone: After seeing 110 bands last year I came up with a new goal. I am trying to see as many bands or musicians from the Downbeat Critics Poll list from 2012 & 2013. So far I am tracking very well. Many shows coming up that will help the end result. Mehliana (Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana) was a very pleasant surprise and great show. Brad was playing piano and electronic keyboards and Mark is an incredible drummer who sounds like nobody else. Will post here at the end of the year with my final tally.

Bookmark and Share Ditto, Marc. I haven’t seen 50+ shows this years, but I have seen over 20 top-notch jazz shows. And this one was in the top 3.

Bookmark and Share I saw the quartet on Tuesday night. They were incredible. Very tight band sound with an all-star band. I saw them two years ago and this time they were even better. So far one of the best shows for the year (50+ bands). Julian played an amazing solo and Antonio blew me away. Scott Colley was rock solid with his solos or playing in tandem with Antonio. Gary was also incredible. He gave everybody a lot of solo space.
