A review of the New Gary Burton Quartet’s Guided Tour, today at All About Jazz. Continuity is a great thing, especially if it’s.a group as strong as this, with young guitar phenom Julia Lage, veteran bassist Scott Colley and Pat Metheny’s drummer of choice for the past decade, Antonio Sanchez, joining vibraphonist Burton, who turns 70 this year (and celebrates with a terrific bio, published next month). The quartet’s frightening virtuosity and implicit perfection is only matched by an explorative spirit that, following up its recorded debut, 2011’s superb Common Ground (Mack Ave), is even better with everyone contributing compositionally to the set. For Burton fans, it’s rarely been better than this group; for newcomers, it’s a terrific entry point to an extensive and stylistically far- reaching discography.
