Had a great evening yesterday at a
jazzfestival in Antwerp. First
Peacock/Baron/Copland/Verheyen,
followed by
Scofield/Swallow/Stewart. Scofield
live was a first for me.Very
entertaining and funny artist with a
very specific, personal, sometimes
bluesy sound. Funny to see him take
of one shoe to work the pedals and
effects. And then Steve Swallow.
Playing his bass like a guitar, so full
of melody! But the star of the evening
for me was Joey Baron. He does not
play the drums. He plays an
instrument and makes music.
Fantastic player! |

Thx Frank for that comment. I’ve
seen some of the best but still, he
impressed me very much. As a
concert always sinks in with me and I
kinda relive it in my mind the days
after, I’m even more enthousiast
about his performance now. Glad I
saw this!Cheers!

The jazz festivals described here sound like true jazz festivals. The trend these days is to fill the roster with pop acts.Detroit has a lot of problems according to the news. But they sure seem to have the jazz festival thing down Pat.Would that the rest of the nation would follow suit.

bxl12378, interesting comment on Joey Baron. Last summer I saw the Unity Band at the the Detroit Jazz Festival , followed by Dave Douglas/Joe Lovano Soundprints, which happened to have Joey Baron on drums. The guy sitting next to me on my right came just to see him and not the other musicans. My son was stting on my left, who plays the drums, and he was just blown away bu how good JB was.
