A review of the fourth annual ELBJazz Festival in Hamburg, Germany, May 24-25, 2013, today at All About Jazz. Every festival has it’s marker, the thing that defines it beyond the quality of its programming. ELBJazz certainly has plenty of great acts - ranging from Trilok Gurtu (with whom Metheny played on the Indian percussionist’s album, Crazy Saints)performing music from his just-released Spellbound, and a first- time, all-improv meeting of Gurtu with two Norwegians, trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær and live sampler Jan Bang to saxophonist Joshua Redman, keyboardist Jason Lindner’s Now vs. Now, Danish guitarist Jakob Bro’s trio, a Linkt Live Remix, featuring Bang, fellow Punkt Festival co-artistic director Erik Honoré, guitarist Stia Westerhus and trumpeter/singer Arve Henrikaen. And that’s only scratching the surface. While the weather didn’t cooperate - largely raining and as low as 8 degrees Celsius, I once the music started in this festvial that takes place on and advantage of the city’s harbor front and shipyard, with shows taking place in the Fischauktionshalle (fish auction hall), close by clubs and churches, as well as j the shipyard itself. Ferry boats ran until 2am, to ferry festival goers from one area of the festival to another, since the programming was full, and tightly scheduled. A great festival that is already putting itself on the map for its distinctive locale, review here: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/artic le.php?id=44667
