I had the opportunity to see this amazing pianist last Friday night for the second time and was totally blown away. He played mostly from his new cd Breakthrough with Mike Pope on bass and Ari Hoenig on drums. His command of the keys and ability to change styles mid-stream is spectacular. If you get a chance to see him live, do it and you won’t regret it. Review :http://readingeagle.com/article.aspx?id=468941 |

ED can be compared to Hiromi. The difference is: she plays music, he plays notes.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with comparing Eldar and Keith at age 26.But,I could do without the moaning.I do like a lot of what Keith does, but I find the moaning more distracting than the occasional cough from the audience.

franksexton, why isn’t it fair to compare
26 year-old Eldar to 26 year-old Jarrett?

I’m not comparing him to anyone either, least of all Jarrett. And I don’t hear "filler or fillgree". I hear wonderful playing and beautiful music. All I can say is, if you haven’t heard him, listen for yourself and draw your own conclusion.

I have his album "Eldar Live at the Blue Note" , which is a trio of covers (Roy Hargrove is on one song also).
Good playing on this one. My wife liked him when he was a kid. I don’t think it fair comparing him to Keith Jarrett.

HAMBONE, I agree it’s only "too many
notes" when the music loses its
integrity, substance, or inspiration. As
tremendous a technique as Eldar has,
or Oscar or Tatum for that matter, I
hear a lot of filler and filigree. As
opposed to someone like Keith Jarrett,
who obviously has an equally
tremendous technical facility but it’s
almost always in service of integrity,
substance, and inspiration. Eldar is 26
now, and for sure he can really play
the instrument. But compare to
Jarrett’s album Facing You, recorded
when he was about 26; a far greater
level of artistic maturity is clearly
evident.

Hey, jnyutah, are you saying Ahmad is
somehow related to Eldar? Or are you just
talking about the metaphorical "family
tree" of all jazz pianists?

It’s only too many notes if the music loses it’s integrity. That’s not the case here with Eldar, nor was it with Fats Waller or Oscar Peterson

As Emperor Joseph said to Mozart: "Too
many notes."

I had the honor of performing in the same program as Eldar over a decade ago at Unity Village. At the age of 13, he was already a wonder, so I can only imagine how much he has grown as a musician since then. Mike Metheny featured him in an issue of "JAM" that same year, so for anyone interested in Eldar’s back story, this article is a great read.

I see from his website he doesn’t have a lot scheduled right now. But from talking to him after the show he will be touring the US more towards the end of the year. Look for him if he comes your way, you’ll be glad you did!
