After seeing the post suggesting Pat play with Michael Franks, I was thinking of who I would want to see Pat team up with for an album. My suggestion would be Tenor player Bobby Mintzer. They have both played with so many of the same musicians I think they would have common ground and yet each bring something interesting to the mix. |

Hague and Peter, you’re right, and I regret using the term "second-tier." (Full disclosure - I never even cracked the 100th tier.) Mintzer is a very tasteful player. I’m just saying he’s not particularly innovative or unique, just really really good.

I wouldn’t call him a second tier player by a long shot. Check out "Twin Tenors" recording with Bobby and Michael Brecker together. Also some great work with the later version of Steps Ahead. His Big Band work is truly amazing as a leader.

Mintzer second-tier? I beg to differ.
And why should it always be young
talent?

Mintzer? Seriously? He’s a second-tier guy. And not exactly a new, emerging talent.

yossarian, you know Dave Holland Quintet has BOTH Chis Potter and Robin Ewbanks on trombone.

I know, Jerry Bergonzi. That would work. Wow. Get it on!
Sometimes I think Pat and Sanborn could be happening... different concepts but could complement each other. As long as Pat did the writing...
What about Pat playing with a trombonist. Haven’t heard that. Mind you the collaboration that honestly works best is with Lyle Mays. That sounds good. Potter/Metheny has legs also.

For myself, I would like to see Pat play with the Dave Holland Quintet.

Well, Pat with the Yellowjackets is a
tantalizing and mesmerising idea.
