John Kelman’s Best Releases of 2012, published today at All About Jazz. 2012 has been another banner year, but one with an ever-present problem: so much good music, but so little time. While there are many other recordings worthy of attention—and inclusion—with the usual condition that only albums that have been reviewed are eligible for selection, here are just a few of the top recorded events in jazz and beyond for 2012, in no particular order. Bookmark and Share Yeah. I can’t stop listening to Farmers Market either. Stian Carstensen, the primary writer, mover and shaker, is a prodigious talent, but on Slav to the Rhythm, the group’s fifth record, he’s finally captured the frenetic energy of the group in performance. ECM fans may also be surprised to hear that Farmers Market’s muscular drummer is the very same Jarle Vespestad who seems to barely breath on his drums when he’s on one of his other gigs, with ECM pianist Tord Gustavsen. Of course, Jarle was playing with Supersilent before Gustavsen, so those familiar with the Norwegian noise improv band won’t be surprised either, but for those who only know his work with Gustavsen, Jarle is a monster, plain and simple...as is everyone in Farmers Market. I saw a solo show of Stian Carstensen at the top of the world in Svalbard in 2011, playing just accordion and banjo (no, not at the same time, though I’d not put it past him to be possible!) and he was, in a word, mindboggling.

Bookmark and Share "djbinder"-I found Farmer’s Market on iTunes. It is an incredible release. It’s remarkable how they put all those different sounds and genres together. I really thank you for making us aware of these releases.I’m particularly excited about this recording and Kurt Rosenwinkels’ Star of Jupiter as well.I find myself listening to this music over and over, which is something I haven’t done in quite awhile.

Bookmark and Share A fine list...I would say I have picked up about 25-30 percent of those selections...there is a new series of 8 classic albums on 4 cd’s for around 15 dollars...MJQ, Ahmad Jamal and the Red Garland was a great way to gather some classics on cd. Spotify scares me...sometimes the new stuff is right there ready to be listened to on the week or two after its release. Branford Four MF’s...and the new Donald FAgen comes to mind.

Bookmark and Share Striggio’s Mass is an excellent classical release, Don Fagen’s Sunken Condos is a favorite. The Orchestrion DVD is essential for followers of Pat’s exploits.I have enjoyed the ECM boxed re-releases of some of the labels early material ( Steve Kuhn, Arild Anderson, Terje Rypdal and Eberhard Weber come to mind).

Bookmark and Share Well, 43 titles, let’s say average out $15 + shipping. somewhere in the vicinity of $750. But seriously, the Farmers Market is incredible, but hard to find. If anyone wants to pick that one up, contact me via my contributor profile at All About Jazz and I can connect you up. If I had to pick a top 10 of those titles, it would be on it. Maybe even #1.

Bookmark and Share I only have Hot House and Unity Band from this list. I wonder what it would cost me to buy the entire list.
