Hi all... Just a note that the new Yellowjackets album came out last week. Called "Timeline" it is a great album. Bobby Mintzer and Jimmy Haslip solos are terrfic. Definitely a title worth picking up.

Bookmark and Share I see they are playing Ronnie Scott’s in London later this year. Could be an interesting setting for them. Cheers John

Bookmark and Share For anyone interested in a couple of great recordings from them checkout Blue Hats and a live recording called "25" i is a concert recording celebrating 25 years as a band. I picked it up in a used bin at the local cd store and it completely turned me on to them. It is fantastic.

Bookmark and Share Well, you guys made me a believer. Just listened to Altered States and Dreamland, excellent jazz recordings. Years ago i heard one of their pop funk things that was kind of generic and I never went back. That’s what I love about the Garage you can learn so much about music form different people. Cheers everyone!

Bookmark and Share The conversation about the Yellowjackets reminds me of a past crtitque of some of PM’s music: it sounds "lite" but it’s not "lightweight..."

Bookmark and Share The first time I saw the YJ in 02 the concert was being sponsored by the Philly cool jazz station. Befroe they came out the host DJ gave a little intro, at which time he said they were "too real to be cool jazz and to cool to be real jazz" I wasn’t sure what that meant, but I guess he meant they weren’t easy to label, whcih I would agree with. Their early recordings were pigeonholed as cool jazz, but after hearing them develope over the years I would call it contemporary jazz, as I would Pat’s music.

Bookmark and Share Not smooth jazz, at all. Listen to - say - Greenhouse. This will prove you wrong definitely. Most of their albums are more than excellent.

Bookmark and Share I’ve personally always liked the Yellowjackets. Of all those "contemporary jazz" groups (Spyro Gyra, Rippingtons, etc.) I always thought they were heads above the rest of them. Great band.

Bookmark and Share Have the new YJ’s release, "Timeline" - love it, excellent jazz ... Tom if the YellowJackets are smooth jazz then PMG may have to be considered even more of a smooth jazz group, but we all know that is NOT the case ... I believe over the years the ’Jackets could arguably be considered to have more of a jazz sound then PMG, now let me be clear PM and PMG are my favorite artists ... anyway just the idea of labeling an artist is probably not a good thing, especially when dealing with musicians that are this talented ... also, the YellowJackets live DVD’s are worth getting ...

Bookmark and Share Just checked out a few samples, sounds great. Have to be honest, I don’t own one Yellowjackets recording. I always thought of them to be dare I say "on the smooth side" But this disc proves me wrong. Some pretty serious jazz here. Thanks for the heads up.
