Another Chance, from the ’One Quiet Night’ album is one of my all time favourite pieces of music. In my opinion this composition is a melancholic masterpiece that juxtaposes beautifully with the title. I do not possess the musical vocabulary in order to describe just quite how Pat manages to begin the piece with the aforementioned melancholia and to then resolve the composition with a sense of redemption but he achieves this with his usual brilliance. I have spent many a late night listening to this wonderful piece of music, just absorbing the beauty of the melodies within.
I wonder if this track has struck a chord with many of Pat’s other fans on the forum here? |

I could not agree more. 1QN is my most listened to CD. I caught PM Trio with McBride at the University of Richmond and he played several pieces from the CD. I love this record.

Hey, no worries S in Boston,
no offence taken at all. It’s
all part of the joys of
internet
communication......there are
so many trolls and people with
subversive motives out there
that it’s unfortunately not
uncommon to be greeted with a
little suspicion.
It’s funny that you bring up
the subject of music piracy as
the guy who introduced me to
Pat Metheny is also a composer
of instrumental music who is
passionately against the
copying or illegal downloading
of music.
Quite a refreshing attitude
from such a prolific collector
of jazz music in general....

Felix, sorry to be snide about the CD. You probably know where I was coming from, but it’s inappropriate for me to have made assumptions. It’s cool to run into someone who has listened so deeply to 1QN. And I agree with you aout Dreams So Real as well!

Thank you ’S in Boston’ for
clearing that up for me, I
have in fact read the liner
notes, but I must admit it was
way back about 5 years or so
ago when I first bought the
cd. Now that you mention it, I
do recall that much of the
session arose from
improvisation, which you quite
rightly point out, makes
’Another Chance’ in particular
all the more amazing!
Just to clarify, not only did
I indeed purchase the album,
but I later bought another
copy for my
brother.....luckily for him I
ended up buying the Japanese
import version with the bonus
track - ’In all we see’.

Felix, sorry to nitpick, but Another Chance is not a composition in the conventional sense. You can read the liner notes in the CD (which I am sure you purchased) to get the full story, but Another Chance is one of several tracks on the CD that were freely improvised, on the same (quiet) night. Which to me makes this track all the more amazing. Another favorite of mine in the same vein is North To South, East To West.

’And Time Goes On’ is another
great track as is the title
track, another of my
favourites.
Pat’s version of Keith
Jarrett’s ’My Song’ is also
great. Check out Ulf Wakenius’
version from his album ’Notes
From The Heart’, an album of
Jarrett covers

I always thought the next track "And time goes on" was the absolute gem on the album.

Absolutely! It is one of the most beautiful Metheny compositions ever (and that is saying a lot!).
