This young pianist and his trio has a brilliant future. He’s Polish, mainly performs in Europe, but i would like to see them tour in the US. Check out the albums Summertime and Trio. Anyone else out there a fan?? |

Nice ! I have to look out for them. |

Tom, you’re in luck! I’ve just checked the Phronesis gig list and they are arranging a tour of the USA/Canada from 13 June to 3 July. |

Marcin’s trio is one of the best trio’s I’ve heard for a long time, before he was signed to ECM the same line up was called ’Simple Acoustic Trio’ they made 4 albums, of which ’Habanera’ from 2000 is worth checking out. Can’t wait for the new album this is great sophisticated trio playing with lots of mileage. |

Just checked out Phronesis. They sound awesome. Thanks for the tip. Do you know if they tour the states? |

I also vote for Phronesis as they are very much an EST level talent...IMHO |

"January" CD is one of my favorites by Marcin. Fortunate to see him play with Tomaz Stanko twice. At first listen I knew he was a huge and rare talent. |

Bob, indeed Phronesis is mpre than excellent. Thanks for spreading the word (I’m beginning to sound like an evangelist - heck, I am one :-). |

If we’re talking about excellent new piano trios, then I recommend Phronesis - I know one or two of our Dutch colleagues are aware of them. They played the other night at our venue in Nottingham (the Bonington Theatre) and were staggeringly good. Think EST without the electronics. All the more impressive for the regular drummer being unavailable and Jim Hart (who is also an excellent vibes player) standing in. There was an intensity and an empathy that you don’t often see. http://www.jasperhoiby.com/ |

Nosso Trio, not bad at all! Thanks for the tip, shock. |
shockandwoe Mar 23 2011 at 4:48 PM |
Thanks, Toke, another really good euro jazz piano group there. I also like the "no live audience" presentation style - just the players and their music. Allow me to put in my own recent find - in case it hasn’t been mentioned in this forum - Nosso Trio. They have a few good, and fun, clips on You Tube - also no live audience ones. Obama might have checked them out recently, who knows! |

Thanks Tom. Will do. |

Hague, try Wolfert Brederode Quartet (Scarabee). Dated 2008, but the band I saw last Sunday is roughly the same, only with a different (Norwegian) bass player. New CD, Post Scriptum, will be released on April 14; I think it’s a must-buy. |

Wow, that’s a garbled statement. I was trying to say that I also enjoy Marcin Wasilewski’s work with Stanko. (As anyone reading this probably already knows, Marcin’s trio has often served as Stanko’s rhythm section over the past few years.) |
thehague Mar 21 2011 at 4:43 PM |
Tomasz Stanko, another favourite of mine! |

Tokeyozi, is the link you provided fully correct? All I get is the YT starterpage. |

Big fan. Also love Marcin the work with Tomasz Stanko. |

Marcin’s trio is brilliant and highly musical, and they just create such beauty. I would add a rec also to Stephano Bollani’s trio. But I gotta say, there’s something intangible about Marcin’s playing that is all his. |

Nice to see a lot of interest in this trio ..... I really love what they’ve done so far . Marvin reminds me of Brad Melhdau ... Very creative, fast on the keyboard and very creative. And like Brad, great bass and drum backup. So, I’d love to see Pat playing with group. And I’d love to see Marcin tour the US. Have their new album reordered. Jx ( patsfan) |

shock, this was indeed shot in Europe, in a music centre near the Amsterdam Central Station. It’s from a long-standing Dutch programme that is very popular among jazz (and classical music) lovers. Today there was this amazing international quartet, which if you like Marcin Wasilewksi, some of you may find interesting as well. Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=m2gJS4DNaK0. |

"...his cover of Cinema Paradiso." I like all of "January, but to me, "Diamonds and Pearls" is most striking. I love the original (Prince piles in all this harmonic stuff), and am still sort of stunned at how Wasilewski transformed it into a really interesting piece of modern jazz. His touch is really nice. Whenever this CD comes on with guests in the house (who generally are not much aware of this sort of thing), they take notice. |

His stuff with Manu Katche was also great....an entire concert is available on YT. |
shockandwoe Mar 19 2011 at 3:19 PM |
Thanks, jx, just when I was thinking of getting a new cd. I checked out this artist on You Tube and clicked on his cover of Cinema Paradiso. Shot at or near what looks like a train station in Europe, it’s beyond beautiful! |

Tafkasrp, indeed I am. Thanks! |

"Would love to hear something new by Marcin." You are in luck. "Faithful" will be released on April 12. |

I’m a big big fan (and that’s an understatement). Would love to hear something new by Marcin. |
