foper: Currently I master (and I use that term loosely) in Sonar, although I’m coming to the conclusion that I need a seperate tool. When I feel like my tracking and mixing efforts warrant a more professional master I will probably pick up Ozone for mastering - I’ve heard very good things about it. Heard good things about Sound Forge also. These days, like you, I run most of my guitars direct and then use Guitar Rig 5 for tonal shaping. However I’m about to do a bunch of acoustic guitar numbers and those will definitely be mic’d and running through the Great River pre. I will also do a DI through the Avalon at the same time. I’ve been playing around with that scenario in preparation and been pretty pleased with some of the results. The Native Instrument stuff is really fantastic. I’ve been using KONTAKT quite a bit and have started to build a couple of my own libraries, one based on guitar ’harp harmonics’ and another based on a acoustic stand up bass. Kontakt comes with it’s own scripting language which allows one to create their own VSTi(s). For a software dev like me, that is just a candy store waiting for the kid in me. Thanks for the kind words, as you know I think highly of your efforts also. |

-m… What do you use for mastering? Do you master within Sonar or do you use another app? My rig is Cubase 5 with multiple VSTi’s. External audio interface is a Presonus firestudio. I record all of my guitars direct in. I use Sound Forge to master. I find that trying to master in Cubase, I can’t get the volume level needed for a final product. I’ve checked out the Native Instrument products and they have some really great samples and such. My main VSTi is Steinberg’s Hypersonic and BFD for drums. Enjoyed your music BTW. |

I use Sonar X1 with an RME UFX Fireface interface. I have several excellent mic pres including a Great River MP-2NV, a JDK R20, an Avalon U5; a nice Royer 101, a Mojave M200 and a couple SM57 mics. Various and sundry guitars, amps and a slew VST softsynths (NI’s KOMPLETE). I struggle too...I think it’s the nature of the beast. |

I’m curious to know what you folks use to record your music. Are you home studio or do you go to a studio. If home studio, what do you use. Set up, what’s your process for laying down tracks, mixing, mastering... I use a home studio and struggle through getting good mixes and masters. |

Have to agree with the previous comments about harn’s Black & White. Really quite an ambitious work and even better: quite lovely to listen to. Nice job Tony! |

harn... I just listened to Black and White....sweet overdubs and a great sound. Having grown up with the sound of Anthony Phillips, Robert Fripp and Steve Hackett I am seriously impressed by the power of your composition. Thanks for sharing. |
