I was thinking about the ealy days and the importance of the opeing track. If Pat made PMG and First Circle now I think that there’s a good chance that the lead tracks would be Phase Dance and Yolanda. What do you think? And what would you say are Pat’s best side one, track ones? |

Change of vote. I had chosen ’Have you Heard’; thinking the subject was about show openers. That hasn’t changed for me. Album wise, Best opener and Perfect side definitely goes to ’San Lorenzo’. There lies the magic that started it all for me. PMG Self-Titled...I believe I would probably forget my own name, before I would lose that introduction and indelible memory. Peace! |

It’s San Lorenzo and Have you Heard coming down the stretch neck and neck!! And the winner is.......! |

I like side one of SLT. The movement from "Minuano" into "So May" is exquisite. (Not trying to say this is necessarily Pat’s best, just that I like it.) |

In France, we’re not this problem ! (Have you heard "have you heard" ?) |

That’s funny when you think about it.. Have you heard Have You Heard? Heard what? |

’Have You Heard’. Completely satisfies the anticipation of the opening; and surely gets the adrenalin flowing. It’s like Pat empties a bag of marbles on the stage; as to say "Ok folks, this is what we do"! Peace! |

When the "Letter From Home" CD first came out,I asked a friend of mine:Have you heard "Have You Heard"? And he said "heard what????????" |

"Have You Heard" - It has such a monster solo on it, just wonderful playing. I think it is when Pat crossed over from being one of the best players of his generation to jazz legend. I never grow tired off that song. |

Thanks -m, that interplay you mentioned really is what made the original PMG so special. |

I agree with Oystein. San Lorenzo is #1 That’s the song that got me hooked in the first place and changed my life forever |

"cdub"-Yes,I see the priestly procession as the introit is sounded."Forward March" or "Barcarole" would work beautifully for these purposes. The incantations of the synth bringing the people forth as the aroma of incense fills the worship space. |

DazedCat: My recollection was that AG was my second PM album so I was really looking forward to the show, and I was really hoping to hear some of the stuff off of New Chautauqua which was my first (and still favorite) PM album. I definitely recall Airstream, American Garage and The Epic. After that there was a whole slew of stuff I had never heard before although I later realized they were on the ’White Album’ which was my third purchase (iirc). Didn’t hear anything off of NC until the Orchestrion tour. The thing that blew me away at that show though was the interplay between all of the musicians and, not surprisingly, particularly Lyle and Pat. Forget what I said in my original post but driving home after the show was like being in some other world that I had never even thought could exist. Mind you that was over 30 years ago...and my mind has been through a bunch of stuff since then (lol). |

-m: that had to be a lasting memory there. Do you recall what else was played? |

I disagree....forward march like barcerole are two of pats best calls to worship |

I’m a bit hazy but in around ’80 or ’81 I saw PMG at the Roxy (a small club) on Hollywood Blvd. I believe they opened with (Across The) Heartland. It was my first PMG concert...I was pretty stunned to say the least, not sure I’ve recovered yet (lol). More importantly, not sure I really want to. |

Excellant question. I have 3 that I think are equally great lead-off songs. San Lorenzo, Minuano Six Eight and Have You Heard. And they were all used as lead offs for concerts and were perfect there also. Pat used Have You Heard for several years as lead off song during concerts and it was always a great opener. |

I agree with these comments. I often think of the very first Pat Metheny I ever heard, which was the opening song on the First Circle tour - Forward March. Pat has a sense of humour. If that "opening track" were indicative of what was to follow, I should have walked out and gone home, it was so bizarre. Sure am glad I didn’t - the show changed my life. |

I would agree with both Tom and Oystein, there’s not much better opening tunes than those. See kids? That old PMG rearing its’ head again :) |
thehague Feb 06 2012 at 11:41 AM |
I agree with Tom: Across the Heartland. Fabulous opening track. Would also be a great opening tune for a gig. |

One of my favorite PMG opening tracks of all time is (Accross The) Heartland. Just hearing that opening piano and Pat’s guitar coming in still give me goose bumps. |
Oystein Feb 06 2012 at 2:19 AM |
San Lorenzo is by far the best 1/1 track in history, that`s my humble opinion! Putting Forward March first on First Circle is just an indication that the man has guts! |
