SUBJECT: | Legends Pat HASN’T played with Back to Subjects |

Pat has played with many legends and many of his heroes but it struck me that there were a few exceptions. Can any of you guys fill me in on whether Pat has played with Max Roach, Wayne Shorter, Steve Gadd, John McLaughlin Billy Cobham, Jan Hammer, any of the Marsalis brothers? Just curious. |

Although they were once on the same label (ECM), Pat never recorded or performed with Anouar Brahem, as far as I know. Now, that would be tantalizing. |

Mark X: Ok, so it was probably Ron Carter who I saw on that clip that I mentioned. I couldn’t find it anymore; no wonder since it wasn’t of the best sound/video quality if I recall correctly. Mountain: there were rumours that Pat would record an entry unto Zorn’s Book of Angels. But it was rumoured to be a solo guitar entry, so interplay between Pat and the great John Zorn would be absent. I’d love to hear it either way! |

Pat and Sarah Jarosz? |

I would like to hear Pat and John Zorn. Masada or Naked City or even Cobra. |

I know Pat recorded and performed with Michael Brecker numerous times however I would love to see him live on some new project with Michael’s brother Randy on trumpet. He has a unique style and been an innovator as well. He has always been overshadowed by his brother (and to much extent deservedly so, Michael ranks up there with Coltrane in my opinion.) But Randy is an amazing player, innovator and soloist in his own right. Pat has used horns many times in projects...one with Randy Brecker would be awesome. |

What Tom just posted. Totally. |

The 60’s Quintet may be one of the finest group of jazz musicians ever assembled in it’s time, along with John Coltrane’s famous Quartet. |
HAMBONE Feb 23 2012 at 9:18 AM |
I guess to the topic’s point, Pat’s style would have complemented the 80’s Mile’s music better than the 50s-70s. But I would have loved to have heard him with the 60s quintet. I just bought the Live in Europe cd that came out recently and it’s amazing. |
Dazedcat Feb 22 2012 at 1:31 PM |
I’ve always thought that Miles’ 1980s live era were his lap of honor. I didn’t care that much for what or how he played on stage but considering what he did accomplish for decades before, he was entitled. Several of his studio albums though were quite good; "Star People", "Tutu" and even "Amandla" were pretty good records. IMHO of course. |

The ’50’s were good to Miles also...sweet tone on the ballads back then. |
john Feb 21 2012 at 3:48 PM |
Hambone, you would have enjoyed it. There was still enough there. Cheers John |
Tom Rudd Feb 21 2012 at 12:46 PM |
I would of given my left you know what to see the early 60’s Quintet. Unfortunately i was a bit to young. |

Apologies S..I am responding to Tom’s squeaky trumpet statement. |
HAMBONE Feb 19 2012 at 10:15 PM |
To all of you who have commented on Miles, I always felt like I really missed out not seeing him perform before he died. But now I am thinking twice. It would have been a real experience either way, but now I wonder if I would have really enjoyed it.I guess I’ll never know and just continue to appreciate the classic stuff I have always loved. |
bluepno Feb 19 2012 at 1:45 PM |
Mike Stern strait from Michael’s Pub caught my attention...a new guy on soprano with of all names Bill Evans, The percussion ( was it Don Alias?) and Al Foster set down some solid beats...but yes s in boston...Miles was more conductor and director than an amazing lead player. It was hero worship on my part. |
Mark X Feb 18 2012 at 3:22 PM |
aloc: I haven’t seen the video you mentioned, but I do know that Pat played on Milton Nascimento’s 1994 album "Angelus". Pat appears on two songs (Vera Cruz and Novena) with Milton, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette and Robertinho Silva. He also appears on a third cut (Amor Amigo) with Milton and Herbie. Wayne Shorter also plays on that album, but unfortunately not on any of the cuts with Pat. |
Domitille Feb 18 2012 at 9:30 AM |
I’d like to see... Pat and Michel Camilo ! |
Tom Rudd Feb 18 2012 at 8:14 AM |
A whole lot of squeaky trumpet staring at Miles butt most of the time. I don’t know if I would call that mesmerizing, it was something I will never forget. |
bluepno Feb 17 2012 at 11:30 AM |
I was at the Kix shows... I was mesmerized. This stuff was raw (check out "We Want Miles") But he played arse out to the audience. I had a chance to see him numerous times later and he really developed his Miles/Pop/Funk sound into a true theater show. |
Steven Andros Feb 17 2012 at 9:37 AM |
I’d like to see a collaboration between Pat and Diana Krall. Perhaps some old school standards, or even a remake of vintage PMG. I bet she’d bring an elegant new flavor to San Loernzo. |
Tom Rudd Feb 16 2012 at 11:37 AM |
Yeah Blupno Pat, Joey & Elvin Jones. Just like what John M did. Little to late for that one. That would of been amazing. |
bluepno Feb 16 2012 at 7:22 AM |
Saw Joey DeFrancesco with Sanborn last week...I bet Pat, Joey and a decent drummer would make some nice music together. |
Tom Rudd Feb 15 2012 at 7:34 AM |
All the above hman and the concert lasted for a total of 42 minutes, Only show I ever saw where people were trying to get a refund. This was at kix in Boston. Part of his come back tour. |
hman01 Feb 14 2012 at 2:30 PM |
You mean Miles played crappy AND he had is back to everybody? |
s in Boston Feb 14 2012 at 12:49 PM |
I agree with Tom - or maybe I go a lot farther. I saw a handful of Miles’ shows in the 80s, and they were ALL crappy. Miles, dressed up like Michael Jackson and looking higher than a freakin’ kite, wandering around the stage tooting out the melody to "Time After Time" . . . . no arrangements, no beginning ro end to anything. The concert Tom is referring to was in the summer of 1982. It was a concert on the Boston Common and I think it was part of the (now defunct) Globe Jazz Festival. Miles opened for PMG, which I think was entirely appropriate. I always thought that early 80s band Miles had with Marcus Miller and Mike Stern was a ripoff of what the Brecker Brothers had been doing - better - for the past 5 or 6 years. (Sorry, but as a recovered Miles acolyte, I am still bitter. Nobody loved Miles’ music from the early 50s right into the 70s more than I did. NOBODY. But his "comeback" was really disappointing, and at times bizarre.) |
DJAndersen Feb 14 2012 at 5:54 AM |
He may not exactly be a legend but I would love to hear Pat with Fred Hersch. |
franksexton Feb 13 2012 at 3:11 PM |
has he played with Geri Allen ? |
HAMBONE Feb 10 2012 at 9:40 AM |
To Tom’s reply, a great experience for both, but I’m sure Pst was in awe the first time. And I know what you mean about Miles playing towards the end of the line. I’ve heard and read similar reviews. |
Tom Rudd Feb 09 2012 at 12:33 PM |
HAMBONE, Great experience for Miles or Pat? ; - )Not to dis every ones hero, but I have seen Miles many times I’d say maybe 15-20, and I have seen him do a couple of crappy shows. I have never seen that happen with Pat. |
HAMBONE Feb 09 2012 at 11:44 AM |
Tom,just the idea of Miles opening for Pat, anywhere, anytime, is a bindblower! That must have be a great experience for him. |
Tom Rudd Feb 08 2012 at 3:27 PM |
Trust, Not sure but I saw Miles open for Pat on the Boston Common sometime in the 80’s. |
Trust Feb 08 2012 at 12:16 PM |
Did Pat ever play with Miles? He was one of his Pat’s heroes. |

Pat played in a cool quartet recording I have heard from Japan with Sonny Rollins. The Quartet was Sonny Rollins, Alphonso Johnson, Jack De Johnette and Pat Metheny. The concert was in and around 1983 (or the one I heard) and was definitely from Japan. I know it featured DOn’t Stop The Carnival, Coconut Bread, McGhee and Moritat (Mack the Knife) and was a Soundboard not sure where my copy is but I know it does exist if you check some of the better known Torrent sites. It is quite good - I mean as one would figure given the lineup. I love Dont Stop The Carnival and Coconut Bread Sonny doing his Calypso Jazz thang is always fine by me and with the other guys providing ample muscular musical support only better. Back to the topic at hand though even though he has played with both most recently on Charlie Haden’s fine Ramblin Boy, I loved how Pat Played with Bruce Hornsby and Jerry Douglas. I thin that trio is the nucleus of a fine and interesting band right there, something different. I am also awaiting further collaborations from Pat with a really good Hammond B3 player. One of my all time favourite collaborations of Pat has always been the fine work he did with Michael Brecker Larry Goldings and the various drummers on Time Is Of The Essence. One of my all time favourites I have said it time and again on this forum, so more collaborations with the sweet sound ing B-3 would be just peachy for me. -HS |
HAMBONE Feb 07 2012 at 12:28 PM |
Too many to mention them all, but my request would be with Wayne Shorter, Steve Gadd and Ron Carter...now that would be an historic quartet. |
Tom Rudd Feb 06 2012 at 9:31 AM |
Yes I would like to hear more about the Pat and Sonny Rollins collaboration also. |
Dazedcat Feb 04 2012 at 11:50 AM |
Metheny with Pat Martino. |
yossarian Feb 04 2012 at 8:25 AM |
Pat has played with Sonny Rollins? Tell us more... He played with Donald Fagen at some point in the 90s I’ve heard... probably a one off club date. there’s a fellow called Lyle Mays who’s a bit of a legend who Pat’s played with. |

PM and Branford Marsalis |
aloc Feb 03 2012 at 9:42 AM |
Pat has played with McCoy on Brecker’s "Tales from the Hudson". I also have the faintest memory of seeing a video on YouTube taken from a Milton Nascimento -concert with Pat, Herbie and Wayne OR Ron Carter. All I remember is that it featured someone of the 2nd Miles great quintet (other than Herbie) that Pat hasn’t played with that often. If Wayne wasn’t in it then the sax was played by Joe Henderson. Or mayde it was all some odd dream. Does anyone else recall seeing & hearing this? |
themanwhoknewtoolittle Feb 03 2012 at 8:33 AM |
Pat has played with McCoy Tyner on Song for Bilbao. I think it is on a Michael Brecker record called Tales from the Hudson. |
thehague Feb 03 2012 at 3:48 AM |
Pat Metheny / Keith Jarrett would be a dream come true. |
themanwhoknewtoolittle Feb 02 2012 at 6:32 PM |
Pat has played with Sonny Rollins. Read the book by Wayne E. Goines. |
Bikenjazz Feb 02 2012 at 12:42 PM |
Metheny and McCoy Tyner would be interesting.......... |
mario toni Feb 02 2012 at 11:06 AM |
Jan Grabarek, Paul McCandless (even though he played somewhere with him, but don’t know where). |
Tom Rudd Feb 02 2012 at 6:45 AM |
Love to see Pat play with Sonny Rollins, if he hasn’t already. Pat and Sonny jammin’ on St Thomas that would be sweet! |
jwmusic Feb 01 2012 at 10:58 AM |
I have always been curious to hear Pat play with Wayne Shorter, an absolute master! The closest we’ve had to a Metheny/Shorter union is Pat’s 99/00 Trio cover of "Capricorn". |
jsjj21 Jan 31 2012 at 8:19 AM |
Don’t know if Pat’s ever played with Vinnie Colaiuta..if so I’ve never heard about it. That could be insanely good. |
Dazedcat Jan 29 2012 at 8:13 PM |
Wikipedia has a pretty exhaustive list of who he’s played with over the years. I didn’t see any of the musicians you asked about listed.__http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Metheny_discography__ |
