By allegiances, I mean admiring certain artists’ work separately, then having them acknowledge or play together later. With Pat, it was his work with Joni in ’79, both of whom I’d listen to for years. Or Pat’s Jonatha Brooke recommendation, decades after I first heard her with The Story. I have to smile at the etymology of "allegiance": “loyalty of a liege-servant to one’s lord.” These artists truly are gods, to me (the only kind of gods I’m familiar with). I’m sure these kinds of associations occur all the time, but those are a few relating to Pat that are personally satisfying.

Bookmark and Share Metheny and Herbie Hancock. It may have taken them a decade or so to finally get together but the wait was definately worth it.

Bookmark and Share I only chimed in about Joni because she changed her music from the early years to most recent, from her solo folkie days to the jazzy period and later with an orchestra. And she had allegiances with many musicians and styles of musicians along the way.

Bookmark and Share Hambone: Joni still very much Joni whoever was in her band. On Shadows and Light Jaco is the guy who gets to do the most.Pat, Lyle and Mike certainly colour the music but no more. Certainly not many solos from them.

Bookmark and Share Joni had many, with Pat, Shorter, Jaco, etc. She basically made herself a chameleon to all and any of the musicians she would play with at any time. I think the joining of Miles with Trane is a big one, especially for the time. There weren’t two bigger names in jazz in the 50’s.And back further than that, Satchmo and Ella. Imagine the impact they had for their time? And a personal fave of mine would be The Concert for Bangladesh with Harrison/Dylan/Clapton. Great musicians collaborating for a great cause.

Bookmark and Share Nautthats an interesting thread. Two allegiances occur to me - Joe Jackson and Todd R playing together - never saw that coming but had followed them both for 30 years plus prior to. The other was Donald Fagen Boz Scaggs and Michael Macdonald as Dukes of September in 2010/11. Now that would be something to see in the UK! One that never happened but if my memory serves me right was rumoured a while back was Pat playing with Steely Dan!

Bookmark and Share Of course when Joni Mitchell added a new band with Wayne Shorter, Pat and Jaco...toss in Don Alias and Lyle and pop music gets turned on its head. The repercussions of such an alliance reverberated through the industry for years...Sting rebuilding with Branford.....Fripp adding Keith Tippet and horns on "ISLANDS"...Santana and John McLAughlin...Sanborn on Bowie, Stones,Paul Butterfield...Joni/Mingus...full circle.

Bookmark and Share Interesting points. Sometimes I wonder whether we stick to artists as if they are a football team... when I was a kid and in to heavy metal it was like that. You were either Led Zep or Deep Purple, AC/DC or Judas Priest etc. Then I realised they were all rubbish! Well, not LZ or Deep P. As a ’fan’ of PMG since 1978 its been great to see how the music has developed and I guess loyalty plays a part in helping you stay with it. I’m always slightly suspicious of people who listen to ’anything’ and claim to like it. I remember a year when I only listened to Miles, Jackie McLean and PMG, really nothing else. Then there was a year of only Weather Report and Steely Dan. I’m like that. I’ve loosened up a bit now and I even like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers - 20 years after everyone else cottoned on. A new PMG album would be good - it doesn’t have to be boundary pushing or amazingly original (how do you follow The Way Up). Just yet more great compositions, amazing playing and amazing sounds would do nicely.
