Congratulations to Pat! Just last night I was wondering if WIAA would be up for a Grammy, and then today it is posted on the home page! I know I am singing to the choir here, but the man deserves all the recognition possible. His music is beyond fantastic!

Bookmark and Share s- I have wondered the same thing and suspect it has more to do with not having the time to devote to pulling it all together, not to mention the expense invovled. In the meantime, there is alot of great stuff out there on You Tube.

Bookmark and Share John, you’re talking about the duo gigs? I doubt those will result in a release. But I’ve been wrong before.

Bookmark and Share Photon Man - A valid point and something my scattered post failed to address. Yes, Pat has always smartly left us wanting more. Equally imprtant, he has always had really high standards for what he’s willing to put out there. But when so much music goes essentially undocumented . . . . you know? I have to wonder if it’s something else. Either he doesn’t think releases are all that important anymore, or he doesn’t have time to get his arms around all the stuff waiting to be sorted through and mixed? I don’t have the answer.

Bookmark and Share s- my comment was regarding your post about Pat and where he’s going with the tours and recordings. He is doing a run in Tokyo in 2012 - I wonder if that might produce a live set/sets. Cheers John

Bookmark and Share Metheny should release backlogged music like S mentioned below in a downloadable format. Make it an exclusive to this website. I can’t help but think it would be more profitable than physically issuing CD’s and all that goes along with that. Mp3 if you have to, FLAC preferred. I really think this is the way he ought to distribute his music now. It’s worked pretty well for other bands.

Bookmark and Share S in Boston: I think Pat’s output makes total sense - although I know what you mean. From some interviews I get the sense that live performance is where he is currently really at. I think The Way Up and Orchestrion were such definitive, detailed, hugely engrossing, original offerings that to then put out a compilation of live stuff with old favourites such as Lone Jack etc would seem irrelevant, however great they sounded on the tour. Kind of hard to follow those albums,so maybe the solo guitar record is the right one. As for Lyle, well he’s an elusive kind of cat isn’t he? But that’s him. There’s so much on YouTube it’s kind of taken the edge of the need for live albums although the artists have no control of how their music is presented on the web, which must really annoy them.

Bookmark and Share How about a 2CD set of Larry & Pat’s live performances from the Blue Note? One CD could be from NY and one from Tokyo. Dave Brubeck (among others) have done this.

Bookmark and Share Have to agree with the general sentiment there S in B ( by the way , I have just about forgiven you for the Stanley Cup thing last June ! ) . From what I have seen and heard over the years, our man is pretty much unflappable during live performance, so why not get the damn Orchestrion DVD out there so we can relive the thrill and not even have to think about searching out iphone footage taken (presumably) illegally ? If ’patbro’ can get his stocking stuffer out here then why not double up with the sibling and release a ’family package from Missouri’ ? Heck , I’ll even get Santa to detour down there from his Arctic trek and pay his gasoline bill ( or reindeer biscuits ) .

Bookmark and Share s and bluepno-That’s why I was pushing in an earlier thread for Pat to release a CD set of Blue Note shows like Jarrett did.For that matter,I’d like it if Pat would release a bunch of live releases like Phish did awhile back.At least us Pat fans would love it!Also down here in Florida, certain types of Metheny shows never reach us,such as the Metheny/Mehldau collaboration that s mentioned. So live recordings would be great for us down here.Maybe they could start recording shows and make them available on this website.Pat? Webmaster? I’m asking respectfully of course.

Bookmark and Share s--You make some great points. I’ve been reading in the press more and more about how the record co’s are wanting to do box sets because they can get some decent margins vs single CD’s/downloads which, when compared to the way a lot of the world is acquiring their music, are fast becoming really irrelevant from a profit standpoint. Didn’t Elvis Costello recently complain that his box set was too expensive and he wouldn’t buy it? I’m sure his record co appreciated that! No doubt Pat realizes all of this and I think that’s why he’s so into touring all the time, cause he’s making some serious bucks for himself, something that’s getting really hard to do with CD/download releases. Not that he hasn’t always been constantly on the road. I too wish he’d put something out from the Quartet, especially the Japan mini-tour from a couple of years ago. And I wouldn’t be surprised if some sort of Metheny box set, in one of his iterations, is in the planning stages as we speak.

Bookmark and Share Good point s in boston...maybe Pat could do a box set, kind of like what chick or bruce hornsby did did to allow the completeists among us to enjoy the projects in their fullness...if wynton can put out a 7 cd set of one set of club dates, I think the market is there for a solid set of some of the last decades live performances. A great idea.I must say Pat has one of the most comprehensive music cataloges of any musician alive.

Bookmark and Share I’m about to say some stuff that will be very unpopular with some of you, so let’s all stay calm and not get too offended, ok? The fact is, I am really scratching my head trying to figure out what’s going on with Pat regarding CD releases these past few years. Honestly, I bought What’s It All About, but had already kind of forgotten about it! The main reason, I guess, is that WIAA seems to me like sort of an afterthought - he’s been playing solo guitar since his earliest days as a leader, and has done more and more of it, usually at the beginning of shows, over the last decade. (Calm down - I like WIAA, ok? I’m just sayin’. I’m used to Pat playing beautiful, deep solo versions of old and new material. The CD is great, just nothing new.) Meanwhile, only one trio CD (plus an "EP") since 2000, released a couple of years after it was recorded? The trio with Christian and Antonio was together and did multiple WORLD TOURS from 2003 through 2008. I can’t believe there wasn’t at least one live double CD, and/or a live DVD from that lineup. We got a live DVD for The Way Up, which is nice. But I think a live double CD featuring a full show (including all the other stuff they played) from that tour would have been a great idea. No live release from the Metheny/Mehldau tour. The European PMG quartet ("Songbook") tour apparently never happened either. There’s a studio DVD of Orchestrion on the way, someday. Again, great - but why not release a live double CD from that tour? ~ ~ ~ ~ So here’s what I want to know - has Pat just fallen behind schedule on getting releases out? Or has he decided that with piracy and all, there’s no point in releasing CDs anymore? If you only bought the studio discs, you only have a partial idea of what the Metheny/Mehldau project was like. If you didn’t get to hear the Christian/Antonio trio live at least a couple of times, you only got part of the story. If you only bought the Orchestrion CD, you basically have NO IDEA what that project was really all about. I’m not whining from a personal standpoint. I’ve been very fortunate to hear lots of amazing music. It just doesn’t seem right that there aren’t more releases to more fully document all of Pat’s projects. (And don’t even get me started on Lyle - where is he?) Maybe Pat will eventually get around to releasing all the stuff he’s accumulated over the years and start churning out CDs like crazy?

Bookmark and Share Yikes! I didn’t see that it was "new age" - I don’t even know what that means anymore. But, new age or old age or whatever -Pat deserves another Grammy. In fact, he should get a Grammy for having the most Grammy nominations and the most wins in the most categories!

C’mon NARAS...and Jethro Tull is not Best Metal Performance...35 grammies is the proof that good music rises to the top.Probably only Alison Krauss rivals that skill acceptance by apparently people who don’t understand the notes...
