Emily Remler was such a great guitarist who died much too young that I’m a little surprised there’s been no mention of her at the Garage. Listening to a live album of hers of late, I’m left wondering if there was any cross pollination, even subliminal, between Emily and Pat. I hear similar impulses--harmonics, long ascending lines, repetitive riffs over many bars, etc.--often, and they both worked at about the same time, before Remler’s untimely and tragic death at 32.

Bookmark and Share Yo Bob: Emily says on the live album that "How Insensitive" is her favorite song to play. Pat also does that one on an album or two. I read somewhere that she said both Pats, Metheny and Martino, were big influences. You’re fortunate to have seen her live. -- mole, I’m sure you know of Emily’s record "East to Wes." Over at Q&A, Pat says "...of course emily remler was amazing." I’ve gotta get back to some of her other records. -- ER: "I may look like a nice Jewish girl from New Jersey, but on the inside I’m a 50-year-old, heavyset black man with a big thumb, like Wes Montgomery." Still makes me smile.

Bookmark and Share naut- I’ve always been a big fan of Emily and think if she’d lived she would have developed into areas one can only imagine. Luckily I had a chance to see her live in Las Vegas in 1984 at The Four Queens. There was this show broadcast on NPR called Jazz Night From Las Vegas and they would record these live shows at the hotel/casino and broadcast them later. She was with the house band and played a bunch of standards in a traditional jazz setting of piano, drums, bass, guitar. I distinctly remember her playing How Insensitive. And just a young kid playing with all of these much older guys in the band but held her own with ease. Regarding Pat, at least in my own mind there was always a musical connection between her and Pat as he was so much on the scene breaking new ground and she certainly was too doing her thing. But definitely a connection and she would have been aware of his ever-enlarging presence as a musician, as everyone, especially younger guitarists, was. She was just a fantastic musician with a very soulful, musical, versatile style and she died way too young.
