Most of you know Pat’s beautiful piece, 5-5-7. I always assumed 5-5-7 involved some special guitar notes, which was outside of my expertise. But finally I googled 5-5-7, and lo and behold 5-5-7 is VERY biblical ! Never saw any indication Pat or family were particularly religious . Anyways, anyone out there have any more insight into the title??

Bookmark and Share Yes patsfan, either way it’s something you just can’t wrap your mind around, and although I find these subjects fascinating, my small human pee-brain always peters out in the face of such abstract concepts. Now God, well I just don’t (who really can?). I hope He’s "up there," but then I start to think about all the evil in the world, and I’m just kind of left dumbfounded. Guess I’ll find out in the end. One thing I am sure of - I love 5-5-7!!

Bookmark and Share Thanks, sb.!!!! ..... .. actually remembered thinking the next morning ... is it 300 million , or 300 billion, or ??? My Google search says 46.5 BILLION light years. Ok, the reasoning here is ridiculous !!! You tell me the universe is NOT infinite??? Or eternal ???? And we humans on earth think that HE. ... GOD. Is approving of all our religions which often engender division, superstitution, hatred, etc etc rather then the loving God we’re seeking. Well, there could be a Trumplike wall around the 46 billion light year diameter ?????

Bookmark and Share patsfan, you sell the universe short (pun not intended but it works) by an unimaginable quantity. Of course I can’t do the math, but according to Wikipedia the observable universe is about 28.5 gigaparsecs, or 93 billion light-years, in diameter. Now that’s a mind-blower.

Bookmark and Share when i was a very young & up-and-coming clarinet player, maybe around age 8, i was sitting on the indoor back porch early one morning, blowing about on the horn, and my master-guitarist father came to me and said: ’ok son . . now . . . i want you to imagine that it’s early evening, and there’s a gentle rain falling on the tin roof above . . . . now play that!’ and i did. that, to me, is ’religion’. somebody said that mostly only criminals and religious fanatics originally immigrated here from europe. look around . . . could it be true?

Bookmark and Share Pat has expressed his agnosticism many times, sometimes subtly and sometimes not-so-subtly. The 5-5-7 from the song refers to two bars in 5/4 followed by one in 7/4. It’s not easy to follow.

Bookmark and Share Yeh, Frank, don’t get me started on religion !! I really know Pat is level headed that way .... certainly if he recommends that book you refer to. And, you don’t have to have a scientific mind to know that religion is basically culture and nothing else. We have a universe ( infinite. ?????.... physicists don’t like to talk about that term ) 300++ light years in diameter ...... guess what ? We are simply microscopic clueless if not intelligent ants in HIS universe. The HIS reveals the very simple minded history of religion !

Bookmark and Share 5-5-7=17. However 7-11=18. So I don’t think 5-5-7 has anything to do with the convenience store. Just a thought...

Bookmark and Share while Pat is from Lee’s Summit, Missouri , home of the Unity School of Christianity and his family is very involved with the church, I don’t he is particularly religious.. In fact, in the past he has recommended a book that was very critical of organized religion. her is another book he recommends "Irreligion: A Mathematician Explains Why the Arguments for God Just Don’t Add Up"

Bookmark and Share Thanks guys , sort of knew it was a sequence of notes, but I googled it when I had a few glasses of vino. Of course, if you Google any threee numbers in Google , you will get verses from every darn book in the Bible 5:5-7 etc (missed the colon of course. ). Maybei was thinking of ’Cathedral in a suitcase’ ! ( From Secret Story)

Bookmark and Share Patsfan, I believe the 5-5-7 you are referring to are ’Time signatures’. Listen to the subdivisions in the piece. Hope this helps.

Bookmark and Share hey patsfan - looooove 5-5-7!! it’s yet another super-dupe pat & lyle composition. i’ve heard pat talk about this tune in the past and he said that it’s got to do w/time signature stuff (it’s two bars of 5 followed by a bar of 7). as far as i know, it’s got nuttin’ to do w/’religious’ stuff, although it may approach the ’spiritual’ as i’ve seen the song title listed as ’5-5-7, within clouds’, but for the most part it’s describing the time signature of the piece. interestingly, he did the same thing with the song right before 5-5-7 on the ’letter from home’ record, a brief tune called ’45/8’, which he said also had to do with it’s time signature. as you prolly know, pat’s always said he has ’trouble’ coming up w/song titles, so there ya go.

Bookmark and Share Possibly a reference to a time signature in the song? Not sure but what a beautiful piece, lots of rhythmic and melodic variation, Lyle’s Synclavier Oberheim sound on display, Pedro’s voice, may be the heart and soul of Letter From Home.
