Another sad news to be announced: Canadian pianist Paul Bley has died aged 83. His record company ECM confirmed that the musician, who lived in the US, passed away at his home in 3 January. (The Guardian) I think it was Pat’s first record in 1976 that joined forces of Paul Bley, Bruce Ditmas and Jaco Pastorius with Pat. It was a group effort not yet showing the typical Metheny sound but I think it suggested the affinity of Pat to free form playing.

Bookmark and Share reviews are mixed on this. I personally like it a lot, it reminds me of a lot of the fusion coming out then like from Return To Forever , John Abercrombie’s Timeless, etc. I read one review that described Pat’s playing as bizarre (with I didn’t think at all). To me it shows that at age 20 Pat was already as acomplished as the current stars of the genre.

Bookmark and Share Sorry to hear of Paul’s passing... I have had the CD you are referring to for about five years or so. I found it in an Ameoba record store and bought it thinking: "Pat and Jaco...how could it be bad" and I was definitely NOT disappointed.

Bookmark and Share I was able to get this from the Michigan Library system MELCat. Pat was either 19 or 20 at the time , Paul would have been either 40 or 41. This is a very good fusion album . I found this on wikpedia . Jaco is the unofficial later title of a 1974 LP album on Paul Bley’s Improvising Artists Label. It is notable for being the first professional recording showcasing the talents of Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny. The two had gotten to know each other in Miami the year before. Their collaboration continued on Metheny’s debut Bright Size Life together with Bob Moses, recorded in December 1975.[2] The record was released the following year by ECM - also home to Bley since his Open, To Love from 1972.[3] The original title was Pastorius/Metheny/Ditmas/Bley and the release number was IAI 373.846.
