If you, like PM, did a cover album of early music influence, what would they be?

Off the top of my head, and I’ll omit any duplicated by PM like Girl from Ipanema
1. Green Onions by Booker T.
2. Superstition by Stevie Wonder
3. Inagaddadavida by Iron Butterly
4. Love Train by the O’Jays
5. A composition from Gary McFarland like Soft Samba.
6. Last Train to Clarksville by the Monkees
7. Satin Doll by Duke Ellington.
Again, this is quick and off the top of my head. |

Well, a couple of great tunes not mentioned before (I think): Unchained Melody and The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore.

I think Joni’s song Court and Spark would be a great vehicle for Pat’s baritone as it lends itself to the big strum, open tuning, various dissonances and is also already idiomatically suited to solo guitar.

An album of Keith Jarrett’s music (preferably a collaboration, ok then let’s have Charlie Haden and Jack Dejohnette participate as well) is much needed and long long overdue. Some other songs terribly and urgently in need of a PM rendition: Up up and away (in my beautiful balloon) and (Somewhere) Over the rainbow, being two of the most beautiful pop songs ever written. And of course as said Beatles and Sinatra (Johnny Mercer’s compositions etc.). I wouldn’t mind a boxset. Bring it on!

What I did was try to think of songs that moved or empowered me - sometimes I was only 5, 6, 7. I certainly could have come up with a "hipper" list, that’s for sure! I grew up in a house where my mom loved Frank, Jobim, and swinging Big Band jazz; my older sister exposed me to 60s psychedelica; and my dad, in a very understated way, loved Country and Western and Southern gospel. Even in my early teen years I could listen to KISS and Barry Manilow all in the same evening. lol

What about an entire album of Jobim renditions and another one solely consisting of Sinatra songs, performed on the guitar. Pat, Tom and Frank have in common that they have never ever been surpassed by anyone, in their genre.

I agree that more Beatles’ music would be good, but maybe Angie and Under My Thumb would be Stones’ ditties that Mr. Metheny could interpret. And, throw in Wipeout and Green Onions for good measure.
