Trying to remember a shared stage with a violinist? Does anyone know if Pat has done this in the past? If not, besides Grapelli, I would like to see Pat with Regina Carter or Ms. Mazz. |

Well, there’s an idea, bluepno! If only.

Im going with a specially commissioned Concerto for guitar and violin by Arvo Part with Hilary Hahn and Pat as the soloists.

Maybe mix it up with Mark O’Conner or Alison Krauss. Alison and Pat share about 50 Grammy awards between them.

Mads Tolling is a pretty cool jazz violinist who can play a lot of style, from gypsy jazz to rock.

bpsail, I concur that Mark Feldman’s work with John Abercrombie is very interesting. Mark gets a great tone, plays in tune, has great ears, and is very musical. I saw them in Amsterdam a few years ago and was very impressed. I was a bit surprised as there are not many jazz violinists that I enjoy. I must say however, it is hard to beat Jean Luc Ponty. I saw him about a year ago in Atlanta and with the right band, he sounds amazing.

Several years ago I read something about Pat sitting in with Billy Bang, but my impression is that it was just for one evening.
Regarding current violinists, Mark Feldman’s work with Johon Abercrombie is interesting.

Thanks Fred - I’ll check it out. Wasn’t the violin on the Brecker album Mike playing through his EWI?

PeeWee, speaking from my experience recording and performing with Jerry Goodman, I heartily agree -- he’s one of the greats. And yet, I tend to lean toward fendweller’s opinion ... I’m not a huge fan of most jazz violin. That said, I’d enthusiastically recommend a phenomenal musician who happens to play violin: Zach Brock ... PeeWee, if you dig Goodman you’ll probably dig Brock; fendweller, you might just dig Brock despite your feelings about jazz violin.

The only "jazz" violinist I’ve
ever paid attention to is Jerry
Goodman.

Personally I can’t stand jazz violin. So no thanks.

I think Jean Luc Ponty would also be a good
choice since they both like electronics.

I think it would be great. Pat on acoustic guitar in a Hot Club setting would give him room to stretch out in a new setting. Bring it on!

Some kind of Hot Club de Pat? Not for me.
