Heh heh. Truth was Debasement had more active posts activity than the regular Garage did. Cheers John. |
shoff Nov 23 2014 at 9:40 AM |
Well, foper, at least a few others of us were complicit in the activities you described, and the blame is certainly not singularly your own. I do understand that our actions had significance -- particularly if that’s what really brought down the basement (pun possibly intended). =) I suspect the scenario you’re referring to was simply one of a long line of things that led to the shutdown, so I hope you won’t continue to beat yourself up over it. I, myself, have moved on and started drinking barley’s beer again, just in a different location! |
bluepno Nov 22 2014 at 11:01 AM |
Just looking through the list of names here...hey n hi folks...I miss the old banter....Pats music sure affected a diverse group of social/political opinions. |
foper Nov 22 2014 at 9:53 AM |
Shoff... I don’t. It’s a place of personal embarrassment for me. I hold a big sense of responsibility for it shutting down. I overstepped in a big way. What makes it worse is not knowing if Pat ever paid much attention to this site and if he holds a bit of anger towards those that were involved in that whole thing. I’m certain his very hectic life probably doesn’t give him any time to pay attention to all of this and really doesn’t care; but there is part of me that thinks maybe he does and it kind of pains me to know that I was part of ruining it. And I owe everyone that enjoyed The Basement a huge apology – especially jimfocus and Pat. |
shoff Nov 20 2014 at 11:10 AM |
<sniff> I miss that place... |
eric Nov 15 2011 at 11:46 AM |
The Basement was a place to "discuss" non music related topics; a social environment that was made up of Pat Metheny fans. I am here for news and discussion about Pat and his musical projects - I like that focus. |
Dazedcat Nov 14 2011 at 10:54 AM |
There might not have been an alien invasion, but the zombie apocalypse is underway as we speak. All you have to do is watch or listen to the news....... |
bluepno Nov 13 2011 at 9:24 AM |
Hi -m, all is well here in Boston. Enjoying the passage of time and the unfolding of ever surprising and humbling daily events. Did you know they cancelled Halloween for the first time in my lifetime? Strange goings on... |
-m Nov 12 2011 at 9:49 PM |
"the US government says there is no proof of alien invasions" Where’s Bola when you need a good refutation of government? (lol) Hope you are well bluepno. |
bluepno Nov 11 2011 at 7:16 AM |
I still have not found the lizard men... and, the US government says there is no proof of alien invasions of our esteemed planet. |
Ahenager2 Nov 10 2011 at 5:13 PM |
Pat says of Obama: One of the most inspiring figures to emerge in decades. Plus he loves Miles and Trane! He also loves the Chicago White Sox yet couldn’t name a single player on the team. Phony... |
-m May 20 2011 at 8:46 AM |
PeeWee: no, that’s the other place. Plenty of beer in heaven. |
barley May 20 2011 at 8:11 AM |
There’s beer in Heaven. My Dad told me. Real beer mind, none of your Mass produced stuff. |
PeeWee May 19 2011 at 10:19 PM |
In Heaven, there is no beer? |
JA May 19 2011 at 12:10 PM |
After they retired the basement, i found I suddenly had time to master quantum mechanics AND knit a prayer shawl depicting all the subatomic particles (except for the Higgs Boson, which would have made it way too big). |
Dazedcat May 19 2011 at 12:04 PM |
80/81 was also the beginning of the end of modern civilization as we knew it. Nobody recognized that at the time though. |
hman01 May 19 2011 at 8:36 AM |
80/81? That was the beginning of the Reagan years! |
bluepno May 18 2011 at 9:00 AM |
Did anyone hear Stephen Hawkings yesterday? |
bluepno May 18 2011 at 8:58 AM |
80/81 entry point to the thread. |
bluepno May 07 2011 at 10:51 AM |
definitely purgatory...with great scotch and a multitude of beers. |
mkit May 06 2011 at 8:41 PM |
Wasn’t the Basement the Ninth Circle of Hell? |
barley May 06 2011 at 1:56 PM |
Amen J21! "You say Obama, and I say Osama!... Let’s call the whole thing off!" |
jsjj21 May 05 2011 at 9:21 AM |
Dazed - these last couple of years would just be so utterly ripe for hilarious arguments. |
Dazedcat May 04 2011 at 6:56 PM |
Sounds good to me Barley. I’d be ready for the "descent downward" as I’m sure a few others would too. |
HAMBONE May 04 2011 at 12:00 PM |
What better way to re-open the dungeon than by the death of bin laden? |
barley May 04 2011 at 2:31 AM |
Dazed, I get the place cleaned once a month. A lot of the beers are out of date, but it’s not looking too bad. I’m sure if we all got stuck in the old place would be up straight in no time. |
PeeWee May 03 2011 at 7:24 PM |
Further Notice is behind the Green Door! |
Dazedcat May 03 2011 at 6:34 PM |
The Basement has been shuttered now for well over a year or so? Imagine the condition that it would be in now if it re-opened? Not that it would matter :) |
wright May 02 2011 at 9:26 PM |
Will those that doubt the death of Osama demand the long form death certificate, and will they be called "deathers"? |
bluepno May 02 2011 at 9:32 AM |
Good job to the military, and thank you for your service. |
s in Boston May 01 2011 at 11:33 PM |
PeeWee - I was just thinking how, in The Garage, news of Bin Laden’s death would have been an occasion for certain people to suggest that liberals like myself must be very sad tonight . . . . THAT was the level of discourse. |
shoff May 01 2011 at 11:28 PM |
Yep, the prez fired the shot. Glad he was better with a gun than with a baseball when throwing out a first pitch. |
PeeWee May 01 2011 at 10:11 PM |
OBL is dead (thanks Mr. President!) The Basement may now be safely reopened... |
thehague May 01 2011 at 12:10 PM |
This key can be found in H.P. Lovecraft’s "Necronomicon". First of all one has to pass the mountains of madness though. |
john Apr 30 2011 at 7:24 PM |
I heard a rumour that there is an incantation buried somewhere in the Book of the Dead that could be used to resusitate The Basement. Any truth to this? Cheers John |
shoff Apr 30 2011 at 3:15 PM |
Dang, basement talk has fired up and I’m late to the party! |
-m Apr 29 2011 at 12:13 PM |
I miss the Basement. I’m not sure, given the typical topics therein, that an emotionless series of posts is/was even desirable. People should care about their beliefs. Some people were nothing more than trolls though - glad to see them gone for the most part. |
bluepno Apr 28 2011 at 9:52 PM |
There were some excellent, yes and polarizing debates that would usually end with Godwin’s Law...amazing 200-300 event posts. Thanks to everyone who helped keep all the balls in the air. Then someone would trip up the juggler.Truly entertaining in a 3 stooges sort of way. |
foper Apr 28 2011 at 12:16 PM |
Boston… PeeWee said it better than I could, but I think you’re being a little unfair. No one forced anyone to delve into the basement. And you participated regularly. I’m glad I know about all the views that exist out there and am thankful for the diversity. I wont elaborate on what I think about your narrow view of conservatives as basement-talk is dead here. I learned a lot about folks and myself through those discussions. I am currently friends with some that hold various views. Yes, I have regrets about the basement – of my own doing (or undoing depending on your point of view) – but I appreciate what it was. Such places are important if you’re willing to maintain an open enough mind to accept there are differences out there. |
barley Apr 28 2011 at 10:58 AM |
"And it had the best bar in town". John, you’ve brought a tear to a curmudgeonly old man’s eye. (He said, putting away an onion.) |
tokeyozi Apr 27 2011 at 2:52 PM |
So that may be what the e-word stood for: enjoyment; well, to some anyway... |
john Apr 27 2011 at 2:39 PM |
Basement was popular though. Posts in there easily outnumbered those in AG . And it had the best bar in town. Cheers John |
Dazedcat Apr 27 2011 at 1:03 PM |
I used to mourn the Basement after it closed but really the website is better off without it. Members seem to get along much better now just discussing music. Politics and religion are always recipes for disaster. |
PeeWee Apr 27 2011 at 11:49 AM |
I don’t agree that the Basement was a mistake...for one thing, it was in response to continual requests/complaints to Management to stem the tide of "non-musical" threads that kept "polluting" the otherwise pristine forum. By creating a separate area for "non-musical" discussion, it allowed the "League of Decency" to have a safer environment in which to carry on in their more restrictive banter...after all, what can possibly be more important and socially relevant than knowing what someone’s "favorite PMG album" is, or providing a pissing contest in areas such as "in what year was YOUR first PMG concert?" Just the same, that apparently wasn’t enough, and some folks just refused to NOT tune in... Secondly, the Basement let you get to know people on more profound and different levels...how they think, believe, and react. To me, it let people explore their levels of humor and reasoning, and essentially revealed that the listenership/visitorship is basically a very diverse world in microcosm...and provided a further opportunity for identification and bonding. Pat doesn’t hesitate to provide an insight into his own philosophical leanings (via the "Pat Recommends" page...). Unfortunately, there are some who are nonetheless offended...or curiously disturbed. |
s in Boston Apr 27 2011 at 10:52 AM |
I must say, I don’t miss the Basement. And that I wish I didn’t know about some of the extreme conservative views held by some of the people here. But I do know and I can’t forget. The Basement was a mistake and I hope it never comes back. This is a music site. |
PeeWee Apr 27 2011 at 10:42 AM |
Here’s another bone for Fido to help give him a representative taste .... http://tinyurl.com/3foe8jv |

barley Apr 26 2011 at 1:12 PM |
Do I detect a hint of enjoyment here? Even, perhaps, laughter? |
thehague Apr 26 2011 at 8:46 AM |
....or forever be silent :-). |
tokeyozi Apr 21 2011 at 2:08 PM |
Well, Fido, this is as close you can get to what was once called the Basement ... any more questions? |
barley Apr 20 2011 at 4:26 PM |
Lurking is his gift. God given. |
d'Heat Apr 20 2011 at 2:57 PM |
John, thanks. Likewise. ********** barley, let the record show my iconoclasm against the dreaded e-word was reactive: I never broached the topic. :) |
hman01 Apr 20 2011 at 12:46 PM |
I thought the basement was a finished basement. |
barley Apr 20 2011 at 11:08 AM |
The dreaded E word |
PeeWee Apr 20 2011 at 7:34 AM |
He lurks! |
john Apr 20 2011 at 7:18 AM |
d’Heat, good to hear from you. Cheers John |
d'Heat Apr 19 2011 at 8:30 PM |
PeeWee, let it go, man. Let it go. |
Fido Apr 19 2011 at 7:19 PM |
Wow. I had no idea what I was opening up here! Sounds like an episode of "Survivor" or something! Sorry I missed it. |
john Apr 19 2011 at 2:21 PM |
No one has mentioned the dreaded E word. |
HAMBONE Apr 19 2011 at 11:59 AM |
I never stumbled into the basement, but from what I remember reading, the banter that is going on here is very reminiscent. |
thehague Apr 19 2011 at 10:13 AM |
Js, the moderator here confirmed my thoughts. He even asked S. to acknowledge the fact himself, which he didn’t. That’s why he got banned. In fact, S. had over 10 different handles. Remember indeed Buzz, Omarkhayyam, My78song, perhaps even that lizard guy (forgot his handle) and several others. Oh well, let it rest. Maybe it’s not a good omen we are discussing this. |
jsjj21 Apr 19 2011 at 8:26 AM |
Peewee - yeah, that was it. I was never too certain of Bola being one of Sten’s made up characters - though I’ll take Hagues word for it since he seems quite certain of it - but Buzz was an easy one. Nice to see all you guys! By the way Peewee, Woodstock was the last address I had in Atlanta before heading back to St. Simons. |
foper Apr 19 2011 at 6:57 AM |
js... The whole Sten thing was fictitious, so it’s hard for me to remember all of his crazy stories. It’s good to see you around though. |
Oystein Apr 19 2011 at 1:00 AM |
Gotten any wiser, Fido? |
PeeWee Apr 18 2011 at 5:57 PM |
Hey j21..the pickpocket’s name was "Buzz" |
thehague Apr 18 2011 at 3:42 PM |
I guess you’re right, Foper. |
foper Apr 18 2011 at 12:02 PM |
Hague... after all these years and you still don’t know me very well. |
jsjj21 Apr 18 2011 at 9:16 AM |
Anybody remember the name of that bs character Sten made up who was supposedly a professional pick-pocket? It was so clearly written in "Sten speak". It was before Bola’s character came along. |
barley Apr 17 2011 at 1:29 PM |
Really, I love this place. Basement or not. Cheers! |
thehague Apr 17 2011 at 3:31 AM |
This is no less than Fopers coming out. He’s solliciting a public spanking. That’s what makes him tick. Oops, basement talk. |
thehague Apr 17 2011 at 3:25 AM |
Bola and Sten were indeed the same creature. A tormented soul. |
Bob Meyrick Apr 16 2011 at 5:30 PM |
I’m feeling a twinge of nostalgia... |
Dazedcat Apr 16 2011 at 2:29 PM |
Lizard bankers, the New World Order, Papal Conspiracy, the endless Right vs Left argument....don’t beat yourself up Foper, I take some of the blame too. Everybody who posted there regularly should. |
bluepno Apr 16 2011 at 12:51 PM |
yikes...the return of the lizard people. |
PeeWee Apr 16 2011 at 12:29 PM |
foper, don’t take all the credit...as john alludes, there was likely too much "truth" being spewed there (in spite of the installed skeptics’ unending mockery)...Garage Management probably had less to do with the Basement’s closure then did our Overlords...you were just an opportune pawn in the greater scheme of things... |
Pete_Vancouver Apr 16 2011 at 12:20 PM |
No need to beat yourself up with a guilty cudgel Fope old fellah . Its takes two to tango down there - at times it was less like a basement than a mosh-pit . I still rather miss the place ! The Penthouse idea sounds interesting , although my sense it it could easily become an attic , full of familiar barrels being scraped. ah John , Sten would have been proud of you , bloke though you clearly are ! |
bluepno Apr 16 2011 at 9:43 AM |
In the dark of night....around 4 am on most evenings....a lengthy discourse would appear...no paragraphs allowed. |
foper Apr 16 2011 at 9:08 AM |
Fido... The basement is a place of personal embarrassment for me. I take full responsibility and blame for its shutdown. The fact that the moderators still allow me on this forum is amazing to me. I think that’s about all I want to say about it. |
foper Apr 16 2011 at 9:03 AM |
Some of us still think Bola and Sten were the same guy. |
john Apr 16 2011 at 6:52 AM |
When will the brainwashed masses wake up. What happened to the basement is a mirror of what is happening around us. The bankster criminals and their lizard masters seek to brainwash and condition the people and close those internet sources that seek to expose their secret workings. It is no coincidence that since the basement closed, their international frauds have crippled the global economy subjugated us with war and the fear of terrorism to make puppets of us. The general masses are duped and utterly compliant to their mind control propaganda, not aware that he ruling elite are the cause of wars, famine, disease. They will try to shut down the internet and likely trigger false flag attacks to distract the people and rally them to false causes. All to get the enslaved masses to relinquish their individual freedoms and rights and become micro-chipped! The elite are creating the oil conflict for competition and that by the economic destruction of U.S. will make western world third world. The herd are brainwashed and conditioned by phony education and media which allows them to rule as knowledge of truth proves the truth of conspiracy. Denial is the dragon we all must slay. |
patsfan Apr 15 2011 at 11:45 PM |
I have a suggestion, why not convert ’Question and Answer’ ... Which has been essentially dead for years .... to a site called ’The Penthouse’. ?? Hopefully that would attract of higher level of intellect and morality. |

Oh some very nice responses here. I’m particularly fond of “and Bola”. You had to be there to appreciate that comment. |
METHenyaddicted Apr 15 2011 at 4:04 PM |
I wonder where some of those passionate ’addicts’ are and why they don’t post anymore? |
tokeyozi Apr 15 2011 at 3:59 PM |
Gotten any wiser, Fido? Maybe so. Or else ... some things are better left buried :) |
hman01 Apr 15 2011 at 1:42 PM |
A Psychological Meltdown |
foper Apr 15 2011 at 12:22 PM |
Barley... Let’s not forget about Sten. Fido... There is no basement. It’s a figment of your imagination. There……………..is………………….no……………………basement. |
Dazedcat Apr 15 2011 at 12:01 PM |
I can’t add a thing to this :) |
john Apr 15 2011 at 10:22 AM |
Oystein, I think your adjective "moist" sums it up nicely - it’s certainly how a number of visits to debasement left me. Cheers John |
thehague Apr 15 2011 at 8:54 AM |
In the words of the esteemed George W. Bush: "there be dragons". |
bluepno Apr 15 2011 at 8:14 AM |
It would be what people call a man cave these days. It is where the dark subjects of religion, politics and interpersonal imperfections were brought out and demolished. |
barley Apr 15 2011 at 7:35 AM |
The best bar in town. Great drinks, fights, music, superb barman, amusing regulars, annoying drop ins, laughs a plenty, a few tears toward the end. And Bola. |
Roll Tide Apr 15 2011 at 7:13 AM |
It was an attempt to divert subversive thought of any kind away from the joys and highs of serious musical discussion by providing an alternate forum. I only glanced at it once, like at one of those death videos. |
PeeWee Apr 15 2011 at 6:38 AM |
It’s where d’heat is buried. |
barley Apr 15 2011 at 4:39 AM |
Anyone? |
Oystein Apr 15 2011 at 2:01 AM |
The shady, moist cellar where we all could gather with our torches and hooded cloaks to expose our darkest thoughts about religion, politics, world climate and sports... The Basement is now history, and all the former participants silently agree that "what happened in the Basement, stays in the Basement". That would probably be best for all mankind hereafter... |
Pete_Vancouver Apr 14 2011 at 11:58 PM |
I always saw it as a subterranean hideout of wit and irreverence , populated by some crusty regulars and tastefully (or tastelessly) decorated in a hue of true colours. Surely renovations must be complete by now? |
patsfan Apr 14 2011 at 11:28 PM |
Barley, Foper or Dazedcat can probably answer that for you .. I guess the basement had problems, Maybe? |
